Bragging Rights: 17 Reasons To Be Proud Of Memphis

Bragging Rights: 17 Reasons To Be Proud Of Memphis

Memphis accolades have been coming in so fast the last few days, I decided it was time for another lovely bragging rights post. But first, a puppy from an adorable Instagram account I recently found.

A photo posted by Dogs of Memphis (@dogsofmem) on

1. Thrillist named Memphis one of "The Next Big Beer Cities Poised To Blow Up".

2. Local hip hop artist Marco Pave has won MTV's "The Freshman" music video contest. His made-in-Memphis video for "Black Tux" will be in rotation on MTV starting this week.

3. Southern Living included Wiseacre's Tiny Bomb on their list of "The 18 Best Southern Craft Beers".

4. Ebony Magazine featured the National Civil Rights Museum, Hattiloo Theatre, and more in a recent article.

5. Men's Journal named Wiseacre's Tiny Bomb one of The 100 Best Beers In The World.

6. Dude Perfect (a YouTube channel with nearly 9 million subscribers) put out a video filmed in Memphis at the Pyramid and it is bonkers. It has more than 5 million views. Watch below.

7. The Memphis Airport announced that airfares are down $100 on average since 2012.

8. Memphis in May announced that the newest event for this year's festival will be "901Fest", an all-thing-local focused event on May 28. Get more info on 901 Fest and how to submit your ideas for the event here.

9. Memphis native and rapper Yo Gotti now has the number one rap album on the Billboard Top 100, coming in at number four overall (only Beiber, Rihanna, and Adele are ahead of him). Read more and see videos in this article from the Flyer.

10. Two Memphis favorites celebrated birthdays on Feb. 29: Goner Records turned twelve and Muddy's Bake Shop turned eight.

11. The Architect's Newspaper featured Memphis in a recent article and touched on a bunch of our most exciting projects: Broad Avenue, Crosstown Concourse, Shelby Farms, and murals. Read it here.

12. The Memphis Zoo has a new baby giraffe!

13. Sometimes it's easy to forget that Memphis hosts hundreds of conventions and meetings every year that bring in money and people. Last weekend was one of our biggest conventions of the year: the Farm & Gin Show (like a cotton gin, not like what you put in a martini). There were 17,000 attendees from 40 states and 15 foreign countries.

14. The Artspace South Main Lofts (which will provide affordable downtown housing for Memphis artists and creatives) got closer to actually happening because of a $25,000 gift from the First Tennessee Foundation.

15. The LA Times published this awesome article about Memphis as an important part of civil rights history, American music, food, and more. Shout-out to my colleagues at the CVB for helping make that story happen.

16. The Harahan Bridge Project is coming along quite nicely. I think this is going to change the way we think about downtown and I can't wait for it to open!

17. Andrew and Michael have done it again. The pair of Memphis chefs are James Beard Award Semifinalists in the "Best Chef" category for the Southeast U.S.

What are some of your favorite Memphis bragging rights?

This happened a couple months ago but I feel like it belongs on this list: Google named Memphis as the "eCity of Tennessee" citing the mobile health advancements being made by the MD2K Center at the UofM. https://www.google.com/economicimpact/ecities.html#TN

Memphis has been chosen to be the 2016 site of Amerivespa, the annual national scooter rally/convention hosted by the Vespa Club of America (and this year also co-hosted by Memphis Kings Scooter Club). Between June 23 and 26, expected to see nearly a thousand scooters around town enjoying the fine things that Memphis has to offer... while doing it on two wheels! Registration is online at www.amerivespa.org.

I'm proud of Overton Park - the old growth forest, the dog park, the playground, the shell, the greensward... I mean the zoo parking lot. I love celebrating Memphis, but let's not include the zoo on a list as long as it is actively combatant against the will of the citizens of Memphis and the residents of the neighborhood it occupies.
