Save the Date: Day of the Dead Fiesta

Posted by Holly Whitfield | October 13th 2015 9892 0

This year, you can celebrate two festive holidays in one weekend: Latino Memphis’ Dia De Los Muertos fiesta is October 30 at the Cadre Building downtown. I’m giving away two tickets to the event ($100+ value). Scroll down to the bottom of the post to find out how to enter.

Update: Congrats to our winner, Sanaria! If you didn’t win, you can still buy tickets here.

Day of The Dead Fiesta

Not to be confused with Halloween, the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating and remembering loved ones who have passed away. You’ve probably seen the sugar skull makeup and decorations, and now you are invited by Latino Memphis to join in the celebration.

For this party, Latino Memphis will have food from several local restaurants, two sangria cocktails per ticket, a cash bar, free sugar skull face painting, paper flower making, and photo booths. Catrinas, presented by Cazateatro Bilingual Theater Group, will perform and be available for photos as well. The attire: skip the costumes, and wear black and white (either one or a combination) then have your face painted when you arrive.

Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, New Ballet Ensemble, Crosstown Arts, Aztec Dancers, Marcela Pinilla, a Latin DJ, and Mariachi Guadalajara will perform. That’s a lot of awesome entertainment and music for one fiesta! Expect dancing.

The party begins at 7 p.m., ends at 11:30 p.m., and is for folks 21and up. Take an Uber/Lyft/cab or park in a garage near the Cadre. Tickets are $50 per person before October 23, $65 per person after October 23, and $70 on the day of the event.

Seriously, though – this isn’t another Halloween party, so it’ll be a faux pas if you show up wearing a Halloween costume. If you want to, you can bring a photocopy of a deceased loved one to add to the Tree of Life.

And now for the giveaway: Giveaway Ended.

If you want to win a pair of tickets, just leave a comment on this blog post telling me you want to go – it’s that easy! I’ll do a random drawing on Thursday, October 15 at noon.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
