Biggest Weekend Ever: October 2015 Edition

Biggest Weekend Ever: October 2015 Edition

Every once in a while, there's a weekend in Memphis that's bursting at the seams with exciting things to do. (Remember this one? Or this one?)

Looks like this weekend, in particular Saturday, is gonna be another one of Memphis Biggest Weekends Ever.

Here's why:

- Memphis v. Ole Miss Football Game (Saturday)

Tigers Football Game Liberty Bowl

The undefeated University of Memphis Tigers play Ole Miss in Memphis this Saturday. It's an early kickoff - 11 a.m. - but excitement for a Memphis football game is at an all-time high.

If Memphis wins, this would be a huge upset for The University of Mississippi and would cement our home team's program turnaround that's been gaining momentum since last season. Either way, though, it's going to be close to a sell out crowd and traffic is going to be wild. Go here for important parking info and plan to arrive early.

Read more from Sports Illustrated, Geoff Calkins, and ESPN, plus listen to U of M President's take on the football program on the October I Love Memphis Podcast.

- Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon, Keith Richards, and more at Memphis Music Hall of Fame Induction (Saturday)

The Memphis Music Hall of Fame honors Memphians who have made a lasting impact in the world of music. Each year, a new class of inductees are announced, followed by a ceremony (read: a big music-filled party) to celebrate.

This year's Induction Ceremony is this Saturday night, October 17 at the Cannon Center and inductees include Alberta Hunter, Al Jackson, Jr., Memphis Slim, Scotty Moore, Charlie Rich, Sam & Dave, and Justin Timberlake.

People are getting really excited about the guest list, too, which includes Jimmy Fallon (who naturally will induct his bro JT), Mike Conley, DJ Paul (of Three 6 Mafia), Keith Richards, and many more.

There are just a few tickets left. Update: The HOF Induction Ceremony is sold out!

- Cooper Young Regional Beerfest (Saturday)

CY Beerfest

It's the sixth annual Cooper Young Beerfest on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Expect about 34 regional breweries (all located within a day's drive of Memphis) and dozens of craft beers. There are still a few tickets left.

Still need reasons to go? Read more here. Update: Beerfest is sold out!

- Memphis Outdoor Festival (Saturday and Sunday)

Memphis Outdoor Festival Dock Dogs

This is the second year for the two-day celebration of the great outdoors in Memphis. Expect craft beer and local food to mountain bike races, trail running, stand up paddle boarding, live music, yoga, zip lining, dock dogs, and more.

While most of the events on this post are just on Saturday, this one is on Saturday and Sunday. Read more here.

- Soulsville USA Festival (Saturday)

Soulsville Festival Postcard

A new music and culture festival makes its debut this year in the Soulsville USA neighborhood on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be not one, not two, but three stages for live music featuring local artists like Artistik Approach, Preauxx, Nick Black, Tonya Dyson, and tons more.

The festival takes place at the intersection of McLemore and College and is totally free and open to the public. You can also expect a bike course, arts and crafts, rock climbing wall face-painting, and food trucks. Read more here.

- Pinch Journal Release Party (Friday)

Pinch Journal Release Party - Fall 2015

Even the Memphis literary crowd is turning up for this weekend. Celebrate the release of the latest edition of The Pinch (the U of M's awesome literary journal) with a party at Storybooth in Crosstown from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m..

Chow down on Hot Mess Burritos, sip a Wiseacre brew or some Pinch punch, meet some authors, and boogey down to some Prince. Plus, bid in a silent auction with some seriously awesome items (including David Sedaris tickets). All proceeds help keep the Pinch in print. Read more here.

- Bass Pro Hunting and Wildlife Expo

While most of the action is next weekend, this Friday Bass Pro Pyramid kicks off a nine day hunting/fishing-waterfowl-Nascar-random celebrity extravaganza. It looks to be just as much a spectacle as the Pyramid itself.

From October 16 to 25, there are showcases, competitions, sales, seminars, local restaurant tastings, concerts, and more. I really can't even begin to scratch the surface of the 15+ things they have going on. Check out the whole list here.

---

Of course, this is only a fraction of what's going on in Memphis this weekend. Zoo Boo has its first weekend at the Memphis Zoo. The MJCC hosts a Literary and Cultural Arts Festival full of author signings and film screenings. Most of the haunted houses have their opening weekends. The Fast and the Furriest 5K is Saturday. Overton Park hosts its annual "A Magical Night" party fundraiser. You Look Like A Comedy Show is Saturday night at P&H Cafe. And that's not even all. Know of more? Add 'em in the comments.

I think the point is: get out and enjoy your city this weekend. Memphis is a great place to be.
