13 Ways To Love Memphis This October (2015)

Welcome to October, Memphis! I’ve teamed up with Volunteer Odyssey to bring you unique ways to give back and love Memphis. This month, we have everything from river cleanup to night hikes to underwater pumpkin carving contests (seriously).

  1. Incredible Insects Program: Monday, October 5 – Friday, October 9, 9:30a-12:30p
    Join Memphis Botanic Garden for this fun and educational school program Students will: Buzz their way over to sample tasty nectar, jump into Insect Olympics, fly into a life cycle matching game, wiggle and dance to an insect anatomy song and more! Volunteers will assist instructors with various craft and activity stations.

  1. Magical Night at Overton Park: Friday, October 16, 3p-6p or Saturday, October 17, multiple shift options all day
    Join Overton Park for their annual magical night! You can help with set up the night before or be there during the event on Saturday and see the magic first hand.

  1. International Archaeology Day Celebration: Saturday, October 17, 10a-3p
    The C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa invites you to its International Archeology Day celebration. The event includes a museum tour, live demonstrations of spear making and flint-knapping, an historic Choctaw film and an exclusive tour of an excavation trench. Drop by to help process prehistoric artifacts excavated from sites in western Tennessee, help in landscaping our gardens and trail, and much more. Come for one hour or join us the whole day.

  1. Fresh Savings Food Incentive Program: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in October, various shifts
    AARP needs volunteers to help at Kroger stores and Farmers Markets in Memphis area for the new Fre$h Savings food incentive program. This program encourages the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables to the low-income shoppers by offering incentives.

    Join Volunteer Odyssey for VolunCheers – our volunteer happy hour! This is great way to for busy professionals to volunteer and meet some new people. Drinks and food provided. Ages 21+

  1. CASA Training: Tuesday, October 20, 5:30p-8:30p
    Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Memphis & Shelby County trains and supports community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the Juvenile Court system.

  1. River Arts Fest: Friday, October 23-Sunday, October 25. Various shifts.
    Volunteer are need to help with the production of RiverArtsFest 2015. If you are looking to be a PART of the ARTS then this opportunity is for you. We have many opportunities to participate in the festival.

Perks: Volunteers receive free admission to the festival ($5 value), a 2015 Festival T-Shirt, snacks, water and the satisfaction of helping us put on a great fine arts festival for Memphis!

  1. Art on Fire: Saturday, October 24th, 6:30p-11p
    Volunteers will be involved with this fun event by handling the various entertainment acts, helping food vendors, assisting with admissions, helping with the silent auction and managing the Green Room for entertainment acts.

Don’t miss this opportunity! This will be a great evening benefitting the Dixon!

  1. Eden’s Run 5K: Saturday, October 24th, 8a-11a
    This race benefits Operation Broken Silence – a Memphis-based nonprofit organization leading a global movement for peace and justice in Sudan. Volunteers are needed to help with race day activities. Food included!

    Join Clean Memphis for the 1st Inaugural Rockin’ the Rivers Cleanup! Let’s celebrate our rivers by showing them a little love. Volunteers are needed at the following locations: Wolf River McKeller Lake and Nonconnah Creek. We’ll meet at WiseAcre afterwards for great local beer!

  1. Nocturnal hike leader: Friday and Saturday evenings (including Halloween weekend!) from 7p-10p
    Join Shelby Farms during Spooky Nights! Hike leaders will teach participants how to use their night vision and other senses to navigate in the night.

  1. Underwater Pumpkin carving contest: Saturday, October 24, 8a-4pm, multiple shifts
    Yes you heard right! Come volunteer at Memphis’s only Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest. This event benefits Creative Aging and they need help with set up and pumpkin-related activities.

  1. Plant some fun: Every Saturday in October including Halloween Day, multiple shifts 6:30a-1:30p
    Volunteering at the Memphis Farmers Market Downtown is a fun, interactive way to give back to our community by supporting local farmers, producers, and artisans, while educating market visitors about healthy eating habits, good nutrition, and the benefits of eating fresh and local.
