This Week In Memphis: Kickoffs, Openings, and Fun Stuff To Do

Here's a quick rundown of a few things I think you'll like this week and weekend in Memphis. I'll publish more detailed posts about some of these events shortly, so check back soon!

memphis will rock your world

Tuesday, June 2
- It's the first week of Bluesday Tuesday concerts at the Tower Courtyard in Overton Square. Every Tuesday from now until the end of August, you can listen to local and traveling blues artists for free (tips and donations appreciated). There are usually two acts and the music gets going about 6:30 p.m. Bring your chairs, but leave the coolers and booze at home. Go here for the full lineup.

- The Germantown Charity Horse Show starts today and ends Saturday, June 6. This 5-day event is a huge tradition and brings thousands of competitors, equestrian enthusiasts, and people who like fun to the Germantown Charity Horse show grounds. There are different competitions each day, plenty of pomp and circumstance, some seriously talented athletes and animals. Plus lots of drinks (or feel free to bring your own), BBQ nachos from the Commissary, plus fun things like a Stick Horse Race for kids, a just-for-fun Jack Russell Terrier race (for real!) and more. Go here to check out the schedule.

Wednesday, June 3
- Wacky Wednesdays at the Brooks Museum kicks off this Wednesday and goes through July 31. Take the kids to the museum from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a mix of indie, international, and classic animated children's films plus family art projects in the drop-in studio. It's free!

Thursday, June 4
- If you're interested or invested in Memphis music, go to this Thursday's lunch, "Celebrate What's Right: Memphis Music Resurgence". There will be four guest speakers discussing the future of our local music scene. Tickets are $30, and the lunch starts at noon at the U of M Holiday Inn.

- It's the first movie night of the Orpheum Summer Movie Series, so head downtown to watch Top Gun starting at 7 p.m. this Thursday. Back to the Future shows at the same time on Friday and movies continue throughout the summer. Click here for the full lineup. Tickets are $5 for kids and $7 for adults.

- The Brooks Museum kicks off its summer alternative film series this Thursday with a showing of "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter", which sounds really interesting. Most of the movies are on Thursdays at 7 p.m., but several are on the weekends. Tickets are $9 or $5 for members and students. See the full lineup in this Commercial Appeal article.

- Peabody Rooftop parties continue! This isn't exactly a kick-off or opening, but I wanted to throw it in there because the Peabody just announced the lineup for the second half of the season, which you can see here.

Friday, June 5
- The Pink Palace's newest exhibit, "Wicked Plants" opens with a book signing and sneak peak on Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (You must buy the book at the event to get in to the sneak peek). Wicked Plants is about poisonous, scary, or otherwise funky plants. It opens to the public for real on Saturday at 9 a.m.

- Memphis Punk Rock Fest 3 gets going with a bang this Friday afternoon at Murphy's at 5 p.m. More than 40 bands will play at midtown venues for three days. Go here for the full lineup and ticket info

Saturday, June 6
- A Day of Merrymaking in Overton Park is a festival for people of all ages. This Saturday, Overton Park will be full of food trucks, live music and entertainment, activities and outdoor games for kids, a community mural-making project at the Levitt Shell, and a hot air balloon. Head to the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or stay later for that night's concert at the Shell). There will be a shuttle from the Overton Square garage starting at 9:30 a.m. The event is free, but $5 donations are greatly appreciated. Dogs are welcome!

- Art of Video Games Opening: From June 6 to September 13, the Brooks will showcase 40 years worth of video game art, videos, interviews, and yes, several games you can actually play. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for kids age 17-7, and free for those 6 and under.

- Brewville at DeNeuville Homebrew Competition is on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the DeNueville Learning Center (190 S. Cooper). Taste local home-brews, enjoy local food and entertainment, and support the DLC's mission of empowering women through education and training. Tickets are $35 per person, $60 per couple, or $20 for a non-drinker ticket.

- The Memphis Comic Expo is back this Saturday and Sunday at the Agricenter with two days of comics for sale, special guests (artists and creators), cosplay contests and more. Go here for info.

Sunday, June 7
- Watch Memphis chefs compete for title of champion of the International Ceviche Competition at Cafe Keough starting at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday. For $15 admission, you can taste ceviche and watch the celebrity judges do their thing, enjoy drink specials and live music. Part of the proceeds go to the Church Health Center.
