5 Things To Do In Memphis This Weekend: 6/5 - 6/7

Happy Friday, Memphis! I feel like I say this every week, but it's a seriously jam-packed weekend in our city. Be sure to check out the Memphis Punk Rock Fest going on all weekend in midtown, plus the following five events you won't want to miss.

installation
"Stories On My Back" at Crosstown Arts.

1. 67th Annual Germantown Charity Horse Show, 7745 Poplar Pike, all weekend, $5 adults/$3 kids, all ages/kid-friendly
This essential Germantown tradition is part sporting event, part festival, and definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in horses, socializing, or seeing something new and different. The main event is the Grand Prix on Saturday evening, when finalists from the week's jumping contests will compete for a $25,000 prize. The goal: ride your horse around the ring, make all the jumps, be perfect, and do it before anyone else. Go here to read 5 Reasons To Go To The Germantown Charity Horse Show.

2. "Stories On My Back" Exhibition Opening, Crosstown Arts (422 N. Cleveland), Friday, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., free, all ages
U of M Art Department Chair Richard Lou presents his large-scale art installation at Crosstown Arts this Friday night; there will be live music from Savannah Long and Los Cantadores, plus food and drink. If you can't make it on Friday, go to Crosstown Arts on Saturday at 2 p.m. for an artist talk and gallery tour, or you can attend a Tamale Making Demo on Sunday at 3 p.m. ($10)

3. A Day of Merrymaking, Overton Park, Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., suggested donation $5, all ages
Bring the kids out to play at the park: games and entertainment, water slides, tons of food trucks, music, a community mural-making project, a hot air balloon, and more. There will be a shuttle from the Overton Square garage starting at 9:30 a.m. $5 donations are greatly appreciated. Dogs are welcome!

4. Brewville at DeNeuville, DeNeuville Learning Center (190 S. Cooper St.), Saturday, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., $35 at the door, 21 and up
Mingle with fellow beer lovers while you taste and judge Memphis-homebrewed beer, all benefitting the DeNeuville Learning Center, which provides education and support for women and families. Food will be provided by Cheffie's, Muddy's Grind House, The Fresh Market, Sweet Grass, and Say Cheese food truck.

5. Starlight Gospel Revue, Baptist Ministerial Association (591 E. McLemore Ave.), Saturday, 6 p.m., $10, all ages
Historic Memphis radio station WDIA presents a night of gospel and gospel-inspired music this Saturday in Soulsville. Performers include: Reverend John Wilkins, The Bell Singers, Hunters Chapel Male Chorus, Southern Sons, Masonic Travellers, Ellis Grove Male Chorus, along with Marcella Simien and The Apostles of Love and The Mighty Souls Brass Band. If you're into Memphis' music heritage (or future), this is the event for you.

Also this weekend, you can dominate in a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament at the Rec Room Friday: the grand prize is a Fat Tire cruiser bike. Indulge in nostalgia as Orpheum shows Back to the Future tonight, or wander the neighborhood during the Cooper Young Art Tour starting at 6 p.m. tonight. Memphis Comic Expo is all day Saturday and Sunday at the Agricenter.

Drop your name in the hat for a chance to tell your story about music at Spillit Story Slam at Amurcia on Saturday night, or go all out at the Taste of Caribe gala benefitting the International Children's Heart Foundation. On Sunday, taste some seafood at the International Ceviche Competition at Cafe Keough. Check the calendar for even more events.

Posted from the link from number 1 3. It's Affordable When I think horses, I think fancy and expensive. But while the GCHS has its share of appropriate pomp and circumstance, it's not pricey to be a part of the fun. Entry is just $5 for adults, $3 for kids, and free for little ones under 5. You can bring your own picnic basket, your own booze, and basically have a seated picnic in the stand while you watch and socialize.
