3 Musicians, 5 Questions, 2 Shows: Disney In Concert at the Orpheum

If you're a fan of Disney, the Orpheum, or music, you'll love the Memphis Symphony Orchestra's upcoming show.

"Disney In Concert: Magical Music from the Movies" is a benefit for the MSO, featuring songs from Disney favorites, clips from the movies, and live singing. It's playing at the Orpheum on March 28 and 29.

This is a worthwhile show for a couple of reasons. First, it's a fun way to introduce kids to both the Orpheum and the Symphony. Second, it's a benefit for the Symphony, which could use a little help right now. Third, if you've never been to classical music concert, this is a good one to try because the video clips and live singing will keep things interesting.

There's more info on tickets and times at the bottom of this post.

I started thinking about all the different elements of "Disney In Concert" and it made me curious about some of the musicians in the MSO. Just for fun, I got in touch with three of them to ask five questions relating to Disney, the Orpheum, the Symphony, and more. Here's what they said.

Joseph Salvalaggio 2

Musician #1: Joseph Salvalaggio
Joseph Salvalaggio is a principal in the Symphony who plays oboe. He's lived in Memphis and been a part of the MSO for 14 years.

1. What's your favorite Disney song?
It's a tie between "Cruella DeVille" from 101 Dalmations (great lyrics and cool clarinet parts) or "I Wanna Be Like You" from the Jungle Book.

2. What's your favorite Disney movie?
The original 1977 Rescuers. I mean, Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor...come on! What could be better?

3. Which Disney character would play you in an animated movie about your life?
Clearly, Mowgli from the Jungle Book.

4. What's it like to play in the city's most historic orchestra pit?
I'm still looking forward to seeing the ghost.

5. How long have you played your instrument?
I have played the oboe for about 29 years. Wow, that looks like a lot now that I've written it down. I should probably be better at it by now :)

Caroline Kinsey 2

Musician #2: Caroline Kinsey
Caroline Kinsey is an acting principal in the MSO who plays horn and has lived in Memphis and been a Symphony member for ten years.

1. What's your favorite Disney movie?
That is a difficult question, but I love the Toy Story movies.

2. "Let It Go": are you sick of it or still singing along?
We - my 5 year old son and I - have "Let it Go" for the time being, but I am sure it will pop up again...I never got tired of it.

3. What's your best memory of going to the Orpheum?
Seeing "To Catch a Thief" during the summer movie series. I had a prize under my seat, too!

4. What's it like to play in the city's most historic orchestra pit?
It's wonderful to feel the history in the walls of the pit of the shows that have been through there, and I am always wondering if I will ever see the ghost Mary!

5. How long have you played your instrument?
37 glorious years!

Erin Kaste 2

Musician #3: Erin Kaste
Erin Kaste is an acting assistant principal in the Symphony who plays violin. She has lived in Memphis and been a part of the MSO for 19 years.

1. What's your favorite Disney movie?
Aladdin – nothing beats a tiger and Robin Williams.

2. "Let It Go": are you sick of it or still singing along?
I turn it up.  My 8-year-old daughter belts it out.  Of course, my 11-year-old son covers his ears and wishes he was anywhere else.

3. What's your best memory of going to the Orpheum?
Taking my daughter’s preschool class to see one of the children’s performances of Nutcracker several years ago.  Bringing 3-year-olds into such a huge, beautiful theater was magical!

4. What's it like to play in the city's most historic orchestra pit?
I never get tired of looking up at the gorgeous details on the walls and ceiling. Some day, I want to explore all the nooks and crannies.

5. How long have you played your instrument?
Since I was three years old.  Somewhere, my mother has a picture of me practicing wearing Mickey Mouse ears.

Disney in Concert is totally kid-friendly and the Disney songs are from Jungle Book to Little Mermaid to Frozen and all in between, so it's not just the old stuff or the new stuff. On Sunday, kids can come early for an "instrument petting zoo" aka a chance to interact with classical instruments. Read more about that here.

I really liked that article because I am a huge Disney fan. After reading it I wanted to listen to some Disney songs immediately. So maybe you could embed some music / videos of Disney to whet the appetite?
