Happy Birthday, Elvis! It’s the King’s 80th Birthday This Week

We can't get away with just one Elvis Week in Memphis. There's the big Elvis Week in August commemorating the King's passing, and a slightly chiller Elvis "Week" for his birthday on January 8. 

Graceland has events planned to celebrate Elvis' 80th Birthday this week. Go here for the full schedule, or take a quick look at event highlights below. Go here for tickets to these events.

Wednesday, January 7th:

– D&N's and Elvis Meetup's Gospel Tribute
11:59 p.m. at Graceland Gates. Two fan clubs sing familiar gospel songs and "Happy Birthday" to Elvis at midnight; fans are invited to join in.

Thursday, January 8th:

– Birthday Proclamation, Cake, and Conversations
At 9:30 a.m. on Graceland's North Lawn, Priscilla Presley will preside over a birthday cake cutting and proclamation of Elvis Presley Day by city and county officials. You can watch the live stream here. At 10:30 a.m., free coffee and cake will be served at the Chrome Grill. At 1 p.m. at the Memphis Airport Holiday Inn, several speakers who knew Elvis will give a talk. Tickets are $20.

– The Auction at Graceland
At 7 p.m., 68 authenticated artifacts will be auctioned off.

– Elvis Birthday Dance Party
From 8 p.m. to midnight, DJ Argo from Sirus XM Elvis Radio will host a dance party at the Memphis Airport Holiday Inn. Tickets are $25.


Friday, January 9th:

– Fan Club President's Event
From 10 a.m. to noon, presidents of Elvis Fan Clubs from around the world with gather with special guests. The general public can attend for $15.

– Elvis Movies at The Orpheum
The Orpheum is showing a double feature of Elvis movie favorites, Jailhouse Rock and Viva La Vegas, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Saturday, January 10th

– Hound Dog Tour by Backbeat Tours
Meet at the Backbeat Tours ticket window at BB King's (143 Beale St.) for a musical tour of all the Elvis sites around town, i.e Sun Studio, Overton Park Shell, Lansky Bros., Memphian Theatre, and more. Opt for a longer tour that also goes to Lauderdale Courts, where Elvis lived with his parents. Tickets are $16 – $47. Go here to check times.

– Tribute To Elvis: Birthday Celebration
The Memphis Symphony Orchestra performs Elvis' biggest hits at 7:30 p.m. at the Cannon Center. Tickets are $5 – $85 through the MSO website.

Also during Elvis Week, you can walk up to the Meditation Garden at Graceland for free from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. daily and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on January 8, 9, and 10. If you want to learn more about The Guest House at Graceland hotel, which is scheduled to open in late 2015, you can stop by the Showroom at Graceland Crossing daily from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
