Ten Restaurants and Shops In Memphis

Ten Restaurants and Shops In Memphis

Have you ever ordered the Badass Nachos at Sweet Grass Next Door? You're hungry, so you get the half order, which turns out to be enough to feed the entire bar. You sit there for a second contemplating the best way to attack this, and then you dig in, nacho by nacho, chipping away at the delicious pile of meaty goodness.

That weird metaphor is exactly how I'm feeling right now, not just because I'm hungry, but because there's so much I can't wait to write about in Memphis.

A big handful of restaurants and shops have opened this fall, and I'm working on posts for many of them. In the meantime, here's a list of places to tide you over as I collect my full reports on some of the following spots.

If I left anything off, no need to worry, just leave me a comment and I'll check it out.

1. Belly Acres (2102 Trimble Place)
Hours: Sun. - Thu. 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., Fri. - Sat. 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Don't you ever put things on your to-do list that you've already done so you can get the satisfaction of crossing it off? I do! I've already written about Belly Acres. Check out the full post right here.

2. Crazy Beautiful (2111 Madison Ave.)
Hours: Mon. - Sat. 11 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sundays noon - 6 p.m.

Crazy Beautiful has been a favorite women's clothing boutique in Memphis for more than a decade, and they recently moved locations and are now open in Overton Square. Go to CB for trendy pieces from fun designers, plus shoes, bags, and jewelry.

3. Kooky Canuck Cordova (1250 N. Germantown Pkwy)
Hours: Daily 7 a.m. - 2:30 a.m.

Folks in the 'burbs can now enjoy all the burgers, beer, and brunch specials that Kooky Canuck has been bringing downtown for nearly a decade. The new location, in the Parkway Place strip mall, has the same rustic lodge look of the downtown location (and they'll have the Kookamunga Burger, too).

4. Love Pop Soda Shop (506 S. Main)
Hours: Wed. - Sat. noon - 7 p.m., Sundays noon - 4 p.m.

Love Pop Soda Shop is not only the only shop of its kind in Memphis right now, it's also meeting a unique need in the South Main district: a place to hang out that's family-friendly, doesn't require ordering alcohol or a meal, but is still fun and hip. You can choose from hundreds of soda flavors, add some ice cream to get a float, and make your own six pack.

5. Maui Brick Oven (7850 Poplar Ave. Suite 6)
Hours: Tue. - Sat. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Gluten-free pizza seekers, rejoice. Maui Brick Oven is open in Germantown in the shopping center off Germantown Pkwy. There are rice bowls, pizzas (the Paradise Pesto and Polynesian Pie were my favorites) and a nice "bites" menu for the kids. It's all entirely gluten-free, but you'd hardly know it. The sophisticated tropical atmosphere (my words) is fun, too. Check out my full post here.

6. Memphis Made Taproom (768 S. Cooper St.)
Hours: Fridays, 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.

See where Memphis Made is made inside the third taproom to open in Memphis. The taproom gets points in my personal book because it's in my neighborhood and is right next to the big red I Love Memphis mural (park in the back near the funky pigeon mural down on York). You can drink, hang, buy merchandise, and there's usually a food truck parked outside.

7. Muddy's Grind House (585 Cooper St.)
Hours: Mon. - Sat. 6 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Muddy's Grind House is in an adorable Midtown house-turned-coffee shop up on a hill (across the street from the Easy Way on Cooper). You can get all your favorite Muddy's treats, some new items (hello scones), and of course, coffee and espresso drinks. You can sit and hang out and enjoy the free wifi with your latte.

8. Porcellino's (711 W. Brookhaven Circle)
Hours: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner most days. The hours are pretty fluid for now.

Porcellino's is the third Brookhaven Circle enterprise for Memphis chefs Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman. It's a butcher shop and market with all kinds of meats and treats, plus a sit-down restaurant.

9. Schweinehaus (2110 Madison Ave.)
Hours: Sun. - Wed. 11 a.m. - midnight, Thu. - Sat. 11 a.m. - 2 a.m.

There's been a lot of buzz about the German-inspired restaurant/beer hall in Overton Square since it opened in October. If you like sausages and basic beer in a festive and lively atmosphere, you'll like Schweinehaus. It's a good spot for a party, and the patio (which has heaters) is a plus

10. Ugly Mug Coffee (4610 Poplar Ave.)
Hours: Mon. - Fri. 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., Saturdays 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Say goodbye to Poplar Perk'n and hello to a new coffee shop that also has a double-meaning for a name. Local roasters Ugly Mug have reopened the East Memphis coffee shop with the drive thru.

Again, if you think I missed something that opened this fall, just leave me a comment and I'll check it out. Looking for Oshi Burger Bar, LBOE, or Bounty on Broad? I've already posted about those here, here, and here, respectively.

Want more? Don't miss any of the fun posts I have planned by signing up for my weekly email. It's a quick note on Friday mornings, "in case you missed it" style, with some extra things you don't get on the blog (a 6th thing to do! a Tweet of the Week! more!) Look to the sidebar on the top right of this page to easily sign up.

Memphis loves to drink and eat.Restaurants as far as the eye can see and the belly can stretch. How about 10 new activity and amusement businesses opening up, instead of endless food places?

Bailey's Country Vittles in Bartlett recently opened. I tried them for the first time yesterday. Super friendly folk and the best chicken liver and onions i have had in a long time. I did not see possum or 'coon on the menu, though.

What a great list! Have you tried Midtown Crossing? Old FoxCee's behind the HiTown. New owners are super sweet and the chef smokes his own meats for a really delish menu. They deliver to the surrounding neighborhood too. Check it out! I'll even meet you there for a cold one and a "Hangover Pizza".
