Enjoy Fancy Drinks, Support Reading, and Win Tickets to Literatini (Giveaway Ended)

Get lucky this Friday the 13th by winning tickets to Literacy Mid-South's annual Literatini.

***Congrats to Sarah McCormick and Whitney Williams for winning the ticket drawing. Thanks to everyone to commented. If you didn't win you can still buy tickets here. ***

Head to Booksellers at Laurelwood and sample martinis from several local restaurants, enjoy some tasty bites, bid on auction items, and shop (20 percent of sales benefit Literacy Mid-South). There will be live music and the typewriter poet guy will make an appearance.

Tickets are $50 per person or $75 per couple, but I'm giving away two pairs for free. To win, just leave a comment on this post telling me the best book you've read lately. You get entered in the drawing twice if it's a book about Memphis or by a Memphis author. (Giveaway ended)

I'll do a drawing at the end of the day today, when I return from a quick road trip I'm taking (and I'll tell you about that, too). Also, Lyft is giving free rides to Literatini. Go to the event's Facebook page for details.

"Life is So Good" by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman is at the top of my list for this year so far. Ironically, it was a Literacy Mid-South recommended reading suggestion during March's Read Across America. Inspiring story about 103-year-old George Dawson, a slave's grandson who learned to read at age 98.

I just finished "The Accidental Millionaire," by Gary Fong. It points out that the way to profit is not to invent some groundbreaking new thing, it's by looking at something that's already there and improving on it.

I recently read Luigi Pirandello's The Late Mattia Pascal, which I strongly encourage. It is a wonderful satirical work on relationships and the difference between real life, and life as a stage.

No contest - the best book I've read, hands down, is A Fraction of the Whole. It's about a father and son relationship in Australia and was the most absurd and hilarious thing I've read in years. The author is like the new John Iriving. Irving is my dad's favorite author so I recommended the book to him and he adored it. My dad is in town for a week from New York and he's the person who inspired my love of books - I'd love to take him to this!!

I just read The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, the Epidemic that Shaped Our History by Molly Caldwell Crosby and loved it. It's one of the more interesting nonfiction books I've read. The book details the yellow fever epidemic in the South and the devestating effects it had on the city of Memphis.
