News Update: Souled on Memphis Selfie Edition

News Update: Souled on Memphis Selfie Edition

Today in Memphis, we thank Grizz Nation for all they've done, find some swanky new Memphis shirts, mark our calendars for a Cat Show, and come down with some serious Memphis podcast fever.

Are you Souled on Memphis? Get a sweet shirt that says it. There are loads of colors, but I'm partial to the tie-dye. Click here if you want one.

First, a big thank you to our Memphis Grizzlies, all the coaches and staff, the Grizz Girls, entertainers, DJs, FedExForum team, sports media, and the rest of Grizz Nation for another season of basketball so insanely mezmerizing, wonderful, and heart-wrenching that it could only come from Memphis. Until next season, Go Grizz!

The May I Love Memphis podcast is out. Listen to it to learn everything you didn't know about Memphis in May from our lovely guest Holly Ford. Also you can listen to April's BONUS Clip to hear me and Kevin debunk terrible Memphis stereotypes. Click on those links or subscribe on iTunes.

If you missed Cinco de Mayo yesterday because you were recovering from Music Fest, I feel ya. Good thing the I Love Memphis handy guide to Memphis' favorite margaritas and Mexican/Tex-Mex joints is good year-round.

Just in time for Barbecue Fest, Memphis Barbecue Supply opened at 7124 Stage Road in Bartlett last weekend. The one-stop shop has grills, rubs, sauces smoking woods, charcoal, expert advice from experienced pitmasters and cooks - basically everything but the meat.

Cooper Young is getting all dolled up for summer. My neighborhood has 36 brand-new banners featuring a new logo and some sweet photos of locals and business owners.

The Hop-On Bus for tourists now has a stop in Cooper Young. Maybe this is a first step in getting some type of peak time shuttle service between popular downtown and midtown neighborhoods for locals..hmm? Anyone?

Ride-sharing apps Uber or Lyft are here in Memphis for real and they're giving away free rides. Download the apps and try them out, because the more success they have early on, they more likely these businesses are to stay and give us more transportation options.

Memphis Made Brewing has finally started bottling their beer. You can buy bottles of Reverberation and Southern Julep brews at the Madison Growler (in Cash Saver) and at Whole Foods in East Memphis.

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens has new visitor hours. You can now visit Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. On third Thursdays, the Dixon stays open until 8 p.m. Don't forget it's always free to go from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Mark your calendars for May 17 and 18, when the Memphis Camerata Men's Ensemble choir will give two performances of traditional spirituals. You know, the kind of songs that give you goosebumps. Go here for all the details.

Want to know more about a Memphis neighborhood? There's an app for that. The Central Gardens App is available for iPhones and offers information on events, plant life, and an historic homes walking tour of the midtown neighborhood. Download it here.

There's a new magazine in town for pet lovers. Bluff City Bark is a an online-only bimonthly publication full of cute puppies, fancy cats, training tips, and animal rescue and safety info.

Speaking of pets, there's a very unique event this weekend at the Agricenter. The MidSouth Cat Fanciers CFA Cat Show is on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for kids. As best I can tell, it's cats being fancy and getting judged. What more could you want?

You only have a few more days to check out the Brooks' exhibit "Dalî: Illustrating the Surreal" (it ends May 11).

Mother's Day is in six days. What are you doing for mom this year? Try not to act surprised that I created this guide to Mother's Days meals and gifts in Memphis: go here to read.

Attention Memphis creative types: you want to go to the Creative Works conference in October. I can't explain it any better than organizer Memphian Josh Horton (of Hieroglyph): "Be inspired by renonwed designers, illustrators and storytellers, learn a new skill in a hands-on workshop, and meet creative professionals from all over the country, right here in Memphis." Go to the website, follow @cworksco, see the speakers, and sign up.

Memphis has podcast fever! I'm super duper excited to announce that I did a guest recording on the brand-new Creative Memphis podcast. Billy Nation and Andrew Lebowitz (the hosts for Creative Memphis) got me all riled up about writing, blogging, being nerdy, and all that good stuff, so go ahead and subscribe to their podcast on iTunes along with the I Love Memphis podcast if you haven't already.

I Love Memphis is back on Tumblr - follow me there for more photos and behind-the-scenes notes. Click here.
