News Update and Photo Roundup: What's In a A Diver? Edition
In today's news update, I speculate the ingredients of a Silky's Diver, congratulate the Starter Awards NBA Fan of the Year, share a slew of upcoming events, and show off your Memphis photos tagged #ilovememphis.
This is a Diver, which you can get at Silky O' Sullivan's on Beale Street. While part of the fun of the Silky's Diver is that its formula is top-secret, many a Memphian has made their best guess as to the contents of this yellow bucket. One semi-believable recipe I heard was: lite beer, Hawaiian Punch, either rum or gin, and maybe some type of cream soda. What do you think this fueler-of-bachelorette-parties is made of? Tell me in the comments.
And now, the news:
Congrats to @GrizzBongoLady on winning the the NBA TV's Starter Awards "Fan of the Year". She beat out the adorably confused Cavs Beer Lady, the inspired performances of the Dancing Pistons Kid, and the absolutely dejected Sad Knicks Fan. Check out this hilarious video and a great acceptance speech from the Bongo Lady herself.
The Brooks Museum is hosting Community Day for their Salvador Dalí exhibit on April 16 beginning at 10 a.m. Take the kids to see G-rated surrealist short films, make Dalí-themed crafts, and see artist demonstrations. Kids and adults are welcome, and it's all free.
A few weeks back, I did an in-depth interview with Memphis rapper Marco Pavé. Since then, he's rocked SXSW and released his first mix tape, "Obscure Reality" which you can sample and download here.
If you haven't yet heard Josh Campbell spin a tale, you're missing out. The Creative Director of Spillit Memphis and talented storyteller is putting on a one-man show on April 25 where he'll tell a yarn or two (or four) about his adventures traveling around the South (and more). Tickets are just $10 and you can buy them at the door.
ICYMI, Paste Magazine said that South Main is one of the top 10 "Undercover Stylish Neighborhoods in US". Yay South Main!
You know the Broad Avenue Water Tower? Well, this Sunday, a group of selected artists will give public pitches for how to transform it into a work of art, and you're invited to participate. For $20 per person, you can enjoy MemFeast - which includes dinner, drinks, entertainment, and a ballot to vote for your favorite project.
Teach901 is hosting their 2nd Annual Teacher Job Fair on April 15 on Central BBQ downtown, where more than 20 education organizations will be looking to hire new teachers. Get more info here.
There are still a few tickets available for Book of Mormon at The Orpheum Theatre, which runs June 24 - 29. Get 'em while they last here.
Styleblueprint Memphis editor Christian Owen was kind enough to feature me in yesterday's FACES of Memphis article. The interview was a lot of funand ladies, if you haven't explored StyleBlueprint, they do a great job of covering local fashion finds, events, interviews with Mid-South women, and style tips.
And now, your lovely Memphis photos. Tag 'em #ilovememphis and your photos could show up here.
