It's the Thursdays Squared 2014 Lineup!

Overton Square and Resource Entertainment Group will start a new weekly concert series called Thursdays Squared in the OS Tower Courtyard on April 17. It's on Thursdays, of course, and starts at 6 p.m. each week. I'm pleased to announce the lineup for the spring season, which starts on April 17 and is full of local favorites.

April 17: All-star Memphis blow-out with Party Planet, Patrick Dodd, the Beale Street Flippers, Ruby Wilson, Al Kapone, and special guests ($5 cover)

April 24: Cowboy Mouth, with special guest American Fiction

May 1: Mighty Souls Brass Band & Ghost Town Blues Band

May 8: Kevin & Bethany Paige, with special guest

May 15: Bluff City Backsliders & Dead Soldiers

May 22: Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster, with special guest Muck Sticky

May 29: Memphis Dawls and The Bouffants

June 5: American Fiction and Almost Famous

June 12: Star & Micey and John Paul Keith and the 145s ($10 incl. 1 drink ticket)

June 19: Rockasaurus Rex with a tribute to Michael Jackson  ($10 incl. 1 drink ticket)

June 26: Trademark, with special guest 8-Ball Aitken  ($10 incl. 1 drink ticket)

July 3: Lord T & Eloise with special guest Kaleidophonix ($10 in advance/$15 at gate, incl. 1 drink ticket)

August 7: G3: The Garry Goin Group featuring special guest Wendy Moten

August 14: Motel Mirrors with Marcella Simien & Her Lovers

August 21: Ghost Town Blues Band with TOP-SECRET SPECIAL GUEST

August 28: All-ages show feat. Walrus + special performance from School of Rock

Thursdays Squared will be part block party, part concert. Covers to get into the stage area will range from $5 to $15, cheap wine and beer will be available for sale, and there are supposed to be some giveaways as well. (Update: In order to get into the official concert area, you must be 21 or over.) You can park in the garage for $3 all night after the free spaces are full.

Off topic comment: what if instead of the generic music that Overton Square currently has pumping through the outdoor speakers, we had local tunes from past and present, i.e., Stax, Sun, some of the artists listed above (who have some really fun tunes)? More Memphis flavor, less like a mall in Anywhere, USA. Just an idea.

Back to Thursdays Squared: You can follow Overton Square and REG on Twitter for info on these artists and shows.

Cause they'd have to pay for it and probably don't have the cost allocated in their budget.

Makes sense, Rachel. I figure there is a reason behind everything, but it's just something to think about if the opportunity arises.

I am sure that they use Muzak or satelliate radio, maybe they can find a more soulful station?

They could always broadcast WEVL!

Do you think some of these concerts might be okay for families with young children, probably only from 6-7:30pm? It's totally fine if not--just curious about whether to get a sitter. Thanks!

Sara, I think kids would be fine as long as you don't mind them being at a venue where alcohol is served. I'm thinking this is going to be pretty family friendly, especially early.

Edit April 1, 4:30 p.m.: I just found out that Thursdays Squared will be 21 and up only to get into the official concert area.

I've been working to have the music turned off for at least a few hours each day so that you can hear the giant wind chimes...

Sorry Sara, but Thursdays Squared will be 21+ only.

I strolled around last Summer watching the remodel of the square and now this Spring it looks better than it has in a long, long, lllooonnnnggggg time... and considering it hopefully will be a big draw - this really would be the perfect time for them to play much more Memphis music than the "Anywhere USA"  coming out of the speakers right now. (Smile)  So lets cross our fingers and really hope they do that.

They seem to have the right sort of memphis soul music pumping at the airport in the new parking garage. Why doesn't someone from OS just ring up them up and find out where they stream it from...

Personally I hear nothing wrong with the music that is pumped in.

The line up looks cool. Definetely going to have to check out my friends in  The Ghost Town Blues Band! Just another reason why I love Midtown Memphis!
