Six Reasons to Go to Memphis Fashion Week 2014

Six Reasons to Go to Memphis Fashion Week 2014

The annual Memphis Fashion Week is back from March 25 to 29 (next Thursday through Saturday). Here are six reasons you should go. At the end of the list, I have a full schedule and ticket information.

1. The runway shows are at unique venues. The Friday runway show will be held at the recently restored circa-1850 Annesdale Mansion (1325 Lamar Ave). The Saturday night show will be at at General DeWitt Spain Airport (2787 N. Second St.) That's right, a runway show at an airport--the hangars, open space, and planes are going to make for an eye-catching backdrop.

2. Indie Memphis is getting in on the action. Indie Memphis has been showing fashion-related films for the last few weeks, and the next (and final) film is "Bill Cunningham New York", about the life of an NYC fashion photographer. MFW ticket holders and Indie Memphis members get in free; it's $7 for everyone else.

3. You can actually shop for the fashions you see. During the day on Saturday, a ton of Memphis boutiques including Kittie Kyle, Eclectic Eye, Oak Hall, and Spruce (see the full list here) will have trunk shows and specials where you can peruse and purchase pieces from the designers you saw on the runway the night before.

4. More than just a showcase, MFW is also about developing the fashion community in Memphis. The Emerging Memphis Designer Project (EMDP) features 15 up-and-coming local designers who were chosen based on submissions. They'll show off small collections on Saturday night, and attendees can vote on their favorite. In addition, you can shop at Madewell Saddlecreek (7615 W. Farmington) on Thursday night and 10 percent of proceeds will go to the Memphis Fashion Fund to support the EMDP.

You can read more about the EMDP designers and models in this great Memphis Flyer article by Sophorn Kuoy.

5. If you like fashion, the VIP tickets are worth it. If you go to the runway shows on both Friday and Saturday, tickets are $50 for each night. If you pay $50 more, you'll get a weekend pass which allows you to hang out in a private lounge before the show, have priority seating, and get the MFW gift bags (serious swag in these babies). In addition, VIP ticket holders can mingle with designers, models, and sponsors at the Preview Party at Wiseacre Brewing on Wednesday night.

6. World-class fashion is coming to Memphis. Designers including Annie Griffin,  Byron Lars, Olia Zavonia, Waverly Grey, Hilton Hollis, Brave Design, Fluid Swimwear, and local artist Becca Belz are coming from all over the country to show off their work. Take a look at a few of the designers' resumes and you'll be impressed. Here's a photo gallery from last year's show, to give you an idea of where we're coming from.
