5 Things To Do This Weekend: 12/6 – 12/8

Happy Friday, everyone! If you're reading this, I hope it's because you're warm and cozy in your electricity-equipped home or office. I'm not sure what the weather is going to do this weekend, but in the event you're able to get around safely, here are some things going on around Memphis. If you do venture out and things are icy, please be careful.

1. Nut ReMix, Germantown Performing Arts Center, Friday – Sunday, $15 and up, all ages

Nut ReMix 2013 from Eric Swartz on Vimeo.

New Ballet Ensemble is doing their own version of the Nutcracker, and the show is set in Memphis on Beale Street. Instead of just ballet, the dancers also perform hip hop, African dance, Flamenco, and jazz. More here.

2. St. Jude Marathon, Midtown and Downtown, Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., free to watch

On Saturday, tens of thousands of runners will make their way through midtown and downtown as part of the annual St. Jude Marathon. If you live near the race route, you won't be able to drive anywhere, so think about bundling up, making some signs, and cheering on these heroes. More info here.

3. The Christmas List, Clark Opera Center Memphis, Saturday at 2 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., $5/kids and $15/adults, all ages

Note: this photo is from a dress rehearsal.

Opera Memphis' The Christmas List is an original opera with a holiday theme. Familiar operatic tunes are rewritten with English words, so this is a great one for kids. Read my full review here.

4. Toy Bash, Minglewood Hall, Saturday, 7 p.m., $125 + an unwrapped toy, 21 and up

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis' Toy Bash has all the staples of a great Memphis gala: a feast, live music, a U of M pom squad appearance, Amurica Photobooth, and plenty of libations, and it's all for a good cause.

5. Those Darlins show, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 10 p.m., $10, 18 and up

Those Darlins released their third album "Blur the Line" in October, and they're back in Memphis to show off this record's evolved, grown-up version of Southern rock. Chris Shaw at the Memphis Flyer has a full review of their album.

As always, there are plenty more events on the calendar and the Holiday Events Guide. This weekend, tag your Twitter and Instagram photos #ilovememphis and they might appear here later.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
