St. Jude Scientists + Local Artists = Art of Science 2013
At The Art of Science exhibition downtown, 27 Memphis artists and 27 scientists from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital prove that art and science can come together for a good cause.
Back in the spring, scientists from St. Jude met with artists to talk about their research and provide photos (think microscpic views of cells, viruses, hair follicles). The artists used the scientists' work as inspiration to create interpretive art. On Friday, Art of Science 2013 opened at the Hyde Gallery downtown on South Main to show off the results.

There are sculptures, paintings, and digital media in all kinds of styles and materials. Some pieces are interpretations of molecules and cells, others are less literal. It seems like lot of art exhibitions focus on what ends up on the wall or the pedestal, but The Art of Science gives a glimpse into the artists' process. The final pieces are displayed next to the image the sparked the work, and during the opening reception on Friday, most of the artists and scientists were there to explain their collaboration.

The Art of Science exhibition will be on display at Hyde Gallery until October 25. There will be a closing reception that night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It's appropriate for kids with some parental guidance, and the gallery is ADA accessible. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., and on Trolley Nights (last Friday of each month) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
