5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 9/27 – 9/29
For the very last time (at least from Kerry), Happy Friday! Here are 5 event you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:
Gonerfest, Goner Records' annual four-day celebration of garage, punk and indie rock, turns 10 this year. Celebrate a decade of loud music, spilled beer and good times with bands like Mudhoney, Ex-Cult, Guitar Wolf, Quintron, Viva L'American Death Ray, Harlan T. Bobo, and Wreckless Eric. This one's not for kids.
Cordova may be part of Memphis now, but it's small farming town roots come out during the annual Cordova Festival. The fest is two days of vendors, crafts, demonstrations, talks, live music and history at the Cordova Community Center.
Grab a spoon and get ready to sample ice cream from local and national ice cream vendors at the 19th annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival. In addition to tons of frosty goodness, there will be activities, games and plenty of outdoor fun. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
LuvMud/LuvGlo, the annual 5Ks benefiting Habitat for Hope, sends its costumed participants charging through Shelby Farms Park, climbing over obstacles, into pools of light (during LuvGlo at night) and swimming through mud. LuvMud is during the day, with LuvGlo (a glow in the dark race) at night. There will be live music, activities and plenty of good times to be had throughout the day.
Tawanda and Cordell Pirtle are beloved members of our community. They're also purveyors of fine fried chicken. Tomorrow night, the Memphis Roast Club is honoring them with a formal roast at MCA, featuring some of Memphis' best comedians. The event is 21 and up, and food (from Pirtles, natch) is included.
If none of these events are your thing, there are a ton more on the blog's calendar.
No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great time. I've had an amazing one meeting, talking to, and writing for and about you guys for the past four years. Let's keep in touch, shall we?
