5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 9/13 – 9/15

Happy Friday the 13th, y'all. Here are five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:

1. Southern Heritage Classic Weekend, Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium (and other locations), Friday and Saturday, priced per event (many are free)

The Southern Heritage Classic is so much more than the annual football game between Tennessee State University and Jackson State University. It's also a weekend-long celebration that includes golf tournaments, music, fashion shows, marching bands, comedians and tons of tailgaiting. Here's a full schedule of events.

2. Animal House, Orpheum Theatre, Friday, 7 p.m., $7

The Orpheum is showing a college classic tonight, just in time for the start of the semester. "Animal House" is a tale of two fraternities, one full of terrifying Anglo-Saxons and one full of…everyone. It's lewd and hilarious and has a killer soundtrack, but it's definitely rated R.

3. Rocky Horror Picture Show, Evergreen Theatre, Friday, 11:30 p.m., $10

Is there a better way to spen Friday the 13th than by watching "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in a theatre full of costumed friends who know the words, the dances, and the appropriate times to hurl things at the screen? There isn't, and if there is, I don't want to know about it.

4. Cooper-Young Festival, corner of Cooper and Young, Saturday, free

Mark your calendars for midtown's biggest party. The Cooper-Young Festival shuts down the intersection of Cooper and Young (and several blocks in each direction) for a gigantic street fair on the third Saturday in September. Be sure to buddy up to your friends in the neighborhood: they've got clean bathrooms, driveways and might be having back yard parties.

5. Hack Memphis, Emerge Memphis, Saturday and Sunday, free

Calling all desingers, developers, programmers and people with big ideas: Hack Memphis wants you for an intense day of creating and building. Hack Memphis is a day for the Memphis tech community to come together to creat new things, hack existsing software and share ideas. It's free, but pre-registration is required.

If none of these events light your fire, there are a ton more on the blog's calendar. Have fun, and come back and tell me about whatever it is you do on Monday.
