Tonight's Plans: National Night Out
Question: how well do you know your neighbors?
I'll admit that, despite living in the same house for the past four years, I only know the people that live immediately next door to me. The only time I ever see the other people on my block involves quick waves as we pass each other.
If you're like me (and I suspect a lot of you are), tonight's the night to fix it.
Tonight is National Night Out, an annual country-wide event designed to bring neighbors together to form strong community bonds in an effort to reduce crime.
In Memphis, there will be dozens of block parties and events tonight in partnership with the Memphis Police Department. Downtown, there's going to be a block party at the Central Train Station Pavillion (where the farmers market is held) from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Police stations across the city are hosting open houses and events. I had a flier stuck in my door the other night saying that the people down the street from me are hosting a cookout tonight, so if you don't see your neighborhood's event listed, ask around (or, just go outside tonight).
