5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 8/9 – 8/11

Happy Friday! Here are the five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:

1. Tunica Baloon Bash, Fitz, Gold Strike, Hollywood, Horseshoe and Sam’s Town casinos in Tunica, Friday through Sunday, all day, free

I know this isn't technically in Memphis, but it's about 45 minutes away, and it's going to be pretty cool. Tunica, Miss. is having a weekend-long hot air balloon festival featuring more than 50 balloons from across the country. You can watch a balloon race, ride in a tethered balloon, and watch the giant balloons glow at night.

2. Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest (1986), Levitt Shell, Friday, 8 p.m., free

I can personally vouch for the quality of Queen's 1986 video from a live concert in Budapest: my family watches it every year on Christmas Eve. In it, they play all of their hits, Brian May is incredible, and Freddy Mercury proves that he's just like all of us by playing air guitar to "Bohemian Rhapsody". This fantastic concert film is showing at the Levitt Shell for free as part of their Summer Concert Film Series on Friday night.

3. Rock'n'Romp, Bridges, Saturday, 2 p.m., $5 adults / kids free

Memphis' monthly kid-friendly concert series returns this month with a concert from Big City Circus, Hanna Star, and Cheap Time at Bridges. The indoor rock wall will be open. It costs $5 per climb, but I recommend paying the $10 for unlimited climbs. Most importantly, Kid President (the Kid President) will be there. As always, kids get in free and adults must be accompanied by a kid to attend

4. Memphis Heat Break Dance Competition, Madison Dance Studio (1555 Madison), Saturday, 5 p.m., $10

On Saturday night, Madison Dance Studio is hosting a competition for the best break dancers in Memphis. If you'd like to compete for glory (and prize money) you can sign up at the door. The judges include Nosey, Misfit and Domkey, and AlphaTrion will DJ.

5. Last Chance Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, Hard Rock Cafe, Sunday, 8:30 p.m., $5

It's tough to get into the official Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest – you have to be good, and you have to be invited. Unless, that is, you compete in and win the Last Chance Tribute Artist Contest. The ETAs are a mixed bag – some are incredible, some are less-than-convincing – but it's a great way to kick off the Elvis Week festivities.

If none of these events butter your biscuit, check the calendar for more. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

  2. Paige says:

Do you have any idea on which of the casino sites will have the largest number of balloons? I the site at Horseshoe/Goldstrike seems limiting. Wondering if SamsTown will have better viewing for the glow.

  3. Paige says:

FYI the Tunica CVB folks said the following on the balloons: "…we expect 10 between Horseshoe & Gold Strike tonight and about 7 at Fitz, Sam's Town and Hollywood. Gold Strike and Horseshoe won't have a glow tomorrow night, so all those balloons will be split up between Fitz, Sam's Town and Hollywood

  4. Jeff says:

The Bluff City Brewers will be serving their amazing home brew at Saturday's Rock n Romp!!  Where else can u get Pineapple Pale Ale, English Bittrer and German Kolsch.  Don't miss it
