5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 8/2 - 8/4
5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 8/2 - 8/4
Happy Friday, y'all! Here are the five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:
- Wheelchair Basketball Game, Mississippi Blvd. Church, Friday, 5:30 p.m., $5 adults / $3 kids
On Friday, the Memphis Rolling Grizzlies (our local wheelchair basketball team) will take on The Med's basketball team in a game of wheelchair basketball. It's all ages, and there will be a raffle for fabulous prizes. Proceeds go to the Rolling Grizzlies' travel expenses for out of town games.
- The Big Lebowski, Orpheum Theatre, Friday, 7 p.m., $7
The Big Lebowski, aka the greatest bowling movie of all time, is playing as part of the Orpheum's summer movie series tonight. The film stars Jeff Bridges as "The Dude", a rather mellow guy who just wants his rug back and John Goodman as a rules-obsessed Vietnam vet. There are also nihilists, mistaken identities, White Russians and marmots. It's a classic.
My Big Backyard, the Memphis Botanic Garden's playground-like childrens' garden, is turning four this weekend. Celebrate with an afternoon of games, crafts, mudpies, and scavenger hunts for the whole family.
- >mancontrol< with Madame Wee, Crosstown Arts, Saturday, 7 p.m., $7
If you're heading to the first New Hi-Tone Show (more on that in a second), get there a little early to check out experimental noise rock band >mancontrol< with Madame Wee at Crosstown Arts (it's next door). I'm not sure what this means, but the event listing notes that "Jay and Kong Wee will be visually occupying the space" and that something called the Eye-la-Phone will be present.
- Dead Soliders, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 9 p.m., $10
It's fitting that the Hi-Tone would officially reopen (in its new location in the shadow of the Sears building on Cleveland) with a show from the band that played the last private party at the bar's old location. Come celebrate the return of rock'n'roll with the Dead Soldiers and Bottom of the Bottle. The show is 18+.
If none of these events butter your biscuit, check the calendar for more. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.
