5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/7 - 6/9

Happy Friday! Here are the five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:

1. The Cameraman, Orpheum Theatre, Friday, 7 p.m., $7

The Orpheum Summer Movie Series kicks off tonight with "The Cameraman", a slient classic about an awkward photographer who tries to win the love of a lovely lady. Before the film (which starts at 7 p.m.), Indie Memphis is giving a quick tour of the silent film era. The movie rated PG-13 for "slapstick violence" and the show is all ages.

2. Day of Merrymaking, Overton Park, Saturday, 10 a.m., $5 suggested donation

Remember elementary school Field Day? The Day of Merrymaking in Overton Park tomorrow is the closest thing most of us have had to that in years (though, I would be very much interested in organizing an adult field day). The Overton Park Conservancy is hosting this day of games, relay races, face painting, food trucks and tons more on the Greensward (aka, giant field) in Overton Park.

3. Memphis Roller Derby Double Header, Pipkin Building (at Tiger Lane), Saturday, 6 p.m., $10 advance / $12 door for adults, $5 advance / $6 door kids

There's roller derby in Memphis, and it's happening on Saturday. If you've never been before, this would be an excellent chance to check out some of Memphis' most incredible female athletes in action. Our all-star team, the Memphis Hustlin' Rollers, will seek to put the hurt on the Mississippi Roller Girls, and then two MRD teams, the Angels of Death and the PrissKilla Prezleys, will play each other. As always, there will be beer, food and merch, and Holly Cole is singing the national anthem.

4. Marcella Simien, Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Saturday, 9 p.m., free

Marcella Simien is one of the most enchanting people in Memphis, both on and off stage. She's taking a seat behind the piano at Mollie Fontaine's on Saturday night to play her special blend of swampy soul music.

5. Memphis Israel Festival, Audubon Park, Sunday, all day, free

Celebrate Memphis' Jewish community this weekend at the annual Memphis Israel Festival in Audubon Park. Listen to live music, eat in the Jewish Food Tent, learn about the history and culture of Israel, and get answers at the "Ask a Rabbi" booth. It's free and completely family friendly.

If none of these events are your thing, there are plent more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great time. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.

Parking's going to be a nightmare at Overton Park Saturday.  Don't get stuck in traffic grid lock, park on the east side picnic area (East Parkway) or in the neighborhoods around the park and walk over.  Probably much quicker and less stress.
