5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/28 - 6/30
Happy Friday! Here are five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:
1. Trolley Tour, South Main Arts District, Friday, 6 p.m., free
Today the last Friday of the month, which means it's time for Trolley Tour, the South Main Arts District's monthly block party. Tonight, check out the Engineering Art Show at the Jack Robinson Gallery, the closing reception for George Hunt at D'Edge, the Big Wig Ball at the train station, or take a walk to the Orpheum to see "The Searchers" on the big screen.
2. Craig Brewer's Indie Origins DVD Release Party, Black Lodge Video, Friday, 9 p.m., free
Filmmaker Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow", "Footloose") is hosing a screening of some of the made-in-Memphis movies that have inspired his career at Black Lodge Video tonight. Black Lodge is kind of tiny, so if you want a seat, get there early. Admission is free, there will be free pizza, and Dead Soliders will play after the show.
3. Mac Miller, Minglewood Hall, Saturday, 8 p.m., $33 (day of)
Rapper Mac Miller is bringing The Space Migration tour to Memphis' Minglewood Hall on Saturday night. Bonus - the opening acts are pretty solid: Chance the Rapper, Vince Staples and The Internet. The show is all ages.
4. Canada Day, Kooky Canuck, Sunday, all day, free
Monday is Canada Day, so the crew at Kooky Canuck (which is owned by a Canadian couple) is celebrating on Sunday with a day of drink and food specials ($3 Canadian beers!) and a poutine eating contest. You're encouraged to wear Canadian attire - think sports jerseys, band t-shirts, red and white.
5. Stax Music Academy, Levitt Shell, June 30, 6:30 p.m., free, all ages
If you've never seen the super talented students from the Stax Music Academy perform, you'll want to on June 30th, when they play a show tracing the blues' transition into rock'n'roll.
