5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/14 - 6/16
Happy Friday! Here are five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend. Also, don't forget that Sunday is Father's Day, so take your dad with you when you head out.
1. Memphis to Moore, Westin Hotel, Friday, 7 p.m., $50
Almost a month ago, Moore, Oklahoma was ravaged by tornadoes. Tonight, Memphian (and Moore native) Angela Copeland is throwing a party to raise money for Moore Public Schools Tornado Relief Fund. There will be live music, a silent auction and complimentary food and drinks from Bleu Restaurant.
When Joe Royer founded the Canoe and Kayak Race on the Mississippi River, he wanted it to be a way to bring positive attention (and incredible athletes) to Memphis. Thirty-two years later, the race brings amateurs as well as Olympians to Memphis for a day of racing on the Mississippi. Fun fact: Royer told me that if you were to race as an amateur with no formal race training, you could complete the 5,000 meter course in 30 minutes because of the river's currents. The race, which has now permanently moved to Father's Day weekend, is family friendly and free to watch.
3. Demo Days, Broad Ave. Arts District, Saturday, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m., free
Head to Broad Ave. on Saturday for an afternoon of making. The galleries and shops on the street will be open and hosting live art demonstrations, including mural painting, sculpture, glass blasting, lifecasting, soapmaking and comic book art. It's free, and some of the activities are hands-on.
If you're a regular reader, you know how much I love Hope Clayburn's Soul Scrimmage. They're one of the most fun bands in Memphis, and they play classic r&b, funk and soul. They're kicking off the concert series at Shelby Farms on Saturday. The shows are much like the ones at Levitt Shell - outside, family friendly, and way more than just live music. Shelby Farms will have food trucks, activities and inflatable water toys.
5. Todd Snider's What the Folk Fest, Levitt Shell, Saturday, 6 p.m., free
Folk singer Todd Snider returns to the Levitt Shell on Saturday, and he's bringing a handful of friends with him. Amanda Shires, Amy LaVere and Jeff Austin will open the show, and Todd will take the stage at 9 p.m. As always, the Shell shows are free and family friendly, and you can bring picnics, lawn chairs and blankets. They'll also have food and drinks available for sale, if you don't want to pack your own.
If none of these events are your thing, there are plent more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great time. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.
