Five Small Things You Need to Eat at Eighty3 (Closed)

Five Small Things You Need to Eat at Eighty3 (Closed)

Next time you go to Eighty3, skip the entrees and salads in favor of ordering a ton of items from the small plates section of the menu. It's perfect for those who want to share or, those who, like me, don't want to have to decide on one thing.

Everything on the small plates menu is between $3 and $15, so it's not unreasonable to go a little crazy, especially if you're sharing.

Here are the five items that should be at the top of your list:

1. Buffalo Deviled Eggs

Eighty3's buffalo devilled eggs are a meta take on a staple: an egg, stuffed with a bleu cheese and green onion filling, topped with spicy fried chicken skin. The cracklings add an unexpected crunch, and the filling makes them more complex than regular deviled eggs. ($5)

2. Spicy Tuna

The menu describes this as "Spicy Tuna, avocado/wontons". All of those elements are present, but what the menu doesn't tell you is that they're layered into a three-inch high tower of wontons and sushi-grade ahi that's been tossed in sesame and chili oils with guacamole-style avocado acting as mortar for the tuna tower. You'll want to use a fork for this one and eat it more like a salad than like nachos. ($15)

3. Smoked Bacon Wrapped Dates

I'm not sure what a date tastes like when it's not wrapped in bacon, and now I'm convinced that I don't want to know. They're served on a lemon gorgonzola cream, and they're the perfect blend of sweet, salty and smoky. Resist the urge to eat them so fast that you don't watch out for the pits. ($6)

4. Salt and Garlic Peanut Brittle

I know that peanut brittle and garlic isn't the most predictable pairing, but trust me: you can barely taste the garlic. In this case, the salt and garlic turn sticky, sugary peanut brittle from a dessert into a savory, slightly sweet appetizer or side dish that isn't out of place next to a meal.  ($5)

5. Lump Crab and Shrimp Ceviche

As soon as the weather hits 90 degrees, I would like to sit on a patio with a drink with an umbrella in it and a huge bowl of this chilled, summery ceviche. It's light and super fresh, with big chunks of crabmeat and shrimp in cooked in citrus and topped with sweet chili sauce. ($13)

These are meals/dishes fitting of a King.  I really like the devil eggs because I love the filling.  I need to try them for real. I have never been here.  They are on my list now.

Another great place for small plates is McEwen's, which is just around the corner from The Madison. Want to do something really fun this week? Check out "Memphis" at The Orpheum. This Broadway production on tour is in its final weeks and not to be missed by an M-town native (new or old). This production is much sharper and polished than the first launch but the power, fire and message still resonant from the first song to the last chorus...the music of Memphis fills my soul...
