Updated March 2019

Lent begins March 7 in 2019, which means the return of one of Memphis’ favorite spring traditions: the Calvary Waffle Shop.

Now in its 91st year (2019) the Waffle Shop is more than a tradition – it’s an institution.

Every weekday from Ash Wednesday until just before Easter Sunday, 75 volunteers will serve about 500 lunches per day in Calvary’s basement. The menu changes a little bit every week day, but some staples – tomato aspic, chicken hash, peppermint ice cream, waffles chicken salad – are always available.

The Waffle Shop is open March 7 – April 12 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

A visiting preacher delivers a short, completely optional sermon every day from 12:05 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays

If all of this sounds great, but you can’t make it downtown during the day, the Waffle Shop has added additional evening hours this year. On Wednesday nights on March 13, 20, 27, and April 3 and 10, they’ll serve their full menu from 5:15 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., with a sermon starting at 6:30 p.m.
