Listen Up: 10 Bands to See in Memphis this December

Ed. Note: The nice thing about living in a music city is that we get a ton of great live shows every single month. The tough thing, however, is deciding which bands to see. With that in mind, here are 10 recommendations for shows you won't want to miss in the coming month.

These are by no means the only great bands playing in Memphis this month. For more complete listings, check the blog's calendar.

1. Holiday Rock'n'Romp, Bridges, Dec. 8, 2 p.m., $5 adults / kids free, all ages

The last Rock'n'Romp of 2012 might be the biggest - it's at Bridges, which means that not only are there great bands (Dead Soldiers, Chad Nixon and Kris Acklen), there's also indoor rock climbing ($5 per climb). The Bluff City Brewers will serve their homebrew to the grownups and there will be free snacks for everyone. Remember - you must have a minor with you to get in.

2. Home for the Holidays, Cannon Center, Dec. 8, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., $15 and up, all ages

If holiday tunes are your thing, don't miss the Memphis Symphony Orchestra's annual Holiday Pops concert at the Cannon Center. The all-ages show will feature the Symphony accompanied by American Idol finalist Alexis Grace, the Memphis Symphony Chorus and the U-Dig Dance Academy.

3. A Very Crunk Christmas feat. the Ying Yang Twins, Newby's, Dec. 7, 10 p.m., TBA, 18+

The Ying Yang Twins, Memphis, TN

The Ying Yang Twins are a southern party rap duo that make music so raunchy that it almost circles back to being quaint. So, why not celebrate Christmas with them at Newby's on Dec. 7th? DJ Crumbz and DJ Ben Murphy will be there for backup.

4. Brister St. Production's 2012 Winter Charity Showcase, The Edge (532 S. Cooper), Dec. 15, 3 p.m., free, all ages

Brister St. Festival, Memphis, Tenn.

There's no cover this show, but it's asked that you bring one of the items from the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality's wish list as a donation. In exchange, you'll get an afternoon / evening of all kinds of music (from Latin to reggae to rock'n'roll) from Marcella Pinilla, Nick Black, The Chinese Connection Dub Embassy, Voice of Golden Eagle and Stereo Alley and spoken word from Knowledge Nick and Steve Fox.

5. Deering and Down, Center for Southern Folklore, Dec. 15, 8 p.m., $5, all ages

Spend a Saturday night with the sultry Lahna Deering and her compatriot, Rev. Neil Down at the Center for Southern Folklore. The pair plays a mix of soulful, bluesy rock that's decidedly Southern without sounding like everyone else. Proceeds from the show benefit the annual Memphis Music and Heritage Festival.

6. Ex-Cult Record Release Party, 1372 Overton Park, Dec. 15, 8 p.m., $5, 18+

Ex-Cult Record Release Poster

Memphis punk band Ex-Cult is having a party to celebrate the release of their brand new record on Saturday, Dec. 15 in the loft (I guess it's a loft) space above the variety store on Cleveland. True Sons of Thunder will open and DJ Hoppe and DJ Dark Allie will spin records.

7. Carrie Underwood, FedExForum, Dec. 18, 7:30 p.m., $40 - $80, all ages

The FedExForum is taking a break from basketball this month so that country/pop star Carrie Underwood's huge Blown Away Tour can make a stop in Memphis. Tickets start at $40, and it's an all-ages show.

8.  Lucero Family Christmas, Minglewood Hall, Dec. 22, 8 p.m., $22, all ages

Join the Lucero family for their annual (and somewhat disfunctional) Christmas party at Minglewood Hall. The band will be joined by Jimbo Mathus and the Tri-State Coalition will open.

9. Snowglobe's 10th Annual Christmas Show, Hi-Tone Cafe, Dec. 25, 9 p.m., $10, 18+

It's a Hi-Tone Christmas tradition: every year, the guys from legendary Memphis indie pop band Snowglobe play a show on Christmas night. In addition to being an evening of excellent music, it's a great reason to get out of the house once the family activities are over.

10.  Trippy Fest 2K12 starring Juicy J, Minglewood Hall, Dec. 29, 8 p.m.,  $32, all ages

Newly inducted Memphis Music Hall of Fame member and Three 6 Mafia member Juicy J is back from Wiz Khalifa's tour and ready to play a not-quite-New-Year's-Eve show at Minglewood Hall. The show is all-ages, and there are VIP suites available.
