5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 11/9 – 11/11

Happy Friday! Here are five events you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend:

1. Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention, Memphis Hilton, Friday – Sunday, $15 per day / $35 for the weekend

Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention

The Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention is three glorious days of geekery. There will be panels, gaming, costumes (and costume contests), visiting artists and writers, gaming, dance parties, Harry Potter Studies and, according to the sidebar on their website, yes, "There Will Be Steampunk".

2. La Boheme, Germantown Perfoming Arts Center, Friday and Sunday, 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., various prices

Opera Memphis is staging "La Boheme", Puccini's ode to being young, inspired, overcome with consumption and broke, at GPAC this weekend. If you loved the musical "Rent", this is the opera that it was based on. On Friday night, there will be a special pre-show bohemian feast in the parking lot at GPAC at 6 p.m. with food trucks, live music and all kinds of artistic shenanigans.

3. MemFix, Cleveland between Overton Park and North Parkway, Saturday, all day, free

MemFix, Memphis, Tenn.

Inspired by last year's New Face for an Old Broad event on Broad Ave., the Crosstown Arts crew is turning Cleveland (between Overton Park and N. Parkway) into an ideal street, at least for the day. Pop-up shops will open in empty store fronts, there will be live music all day (the schedule is very impressive), an artists market, live art and performances and plenty of civic whimsy.

4. Dinstuhl's Holiday Open House, Dinstuhls (5280 Pleasant View), Sunday, 12 p.m., free

Dinstuhl's, Memphis, Tenn.

The only thing better than fancy chocolate is free fancy chocolate. On Sunday, Dinstuhl's (Memphis' favorite family-run confectionery) is opening up their shop and kitchen on Pleasant View Rd. for a holiday open house. During the open house, you can tour the kitchen, get special open house discounts and sample all kinds of amazing treats.

5. Victorian Village Tent Revival, Victorian Village, Sunday, 2 p.m., $10 Victorian Village members / $20 non-members

Spend Sunday afternoon checking out Victorian Village's revival – both in terms of the exciting things happening in the historic neighborhood and in terms of an afternoon tent revival party. Trolley Stop Market is providing a catfish lunch, there will be live gospel and bluegrass music, and you can tour the newly reopened Mallory-Neely House for free.

If none of these events are your thing, there are tons more on the blog's calendar. If you're at MemFix, come find me. I'll be there with the Rolling Truth or Dare Machine, and since Saturday is my birthday, you can dare me to do things. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast.
