Cash Mobs Rule Everything Around Me: Memphis' First is Coming Up
Dolla dolla bill, y'all. Cash mobs - a flash-mob-style way of supporting local businesses - is coming to Memphis.
Cash mobs are the flash mob's more beneficial, productive sister. During a flash mob, people show up to a place en masse and do something (that something usually being a ridiculous dance). During a cash mob, people show up to a place, always a small local business, and spend money en masse.
The first cash mob was organized in Buffalo, New York in 2011. Since then, the idea has spread all over the country, giving people a way to come together in support of the businesses that define communities. On October 17th, Memphis is getting its first cash mob (that I know of).
Organizer Shannon Dixon told me the rules for the first cash mob, and they're pretty simple:
1. Show up to Goner Records on Oct. 17th, 2012 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
2. Spend roughly $20 at the shop (which will be easy to do, as they have a ton of good music, t-shirts, books and more).
3. Try to meet three new people.
4. Be kind and patient.
During the Goner Records cash mob, 10 percent of all of the store's profits will be donated to the Cooper Young Community Association. Also, the Amurica Photo Booth will be parked outside of the store.
