The South Main Arts District is turning into a giant artists market and street fair for this weekend’s River Arts Fest. Assignment #272 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to spend a day at the festival.

During the three days of River Arts Fest, you can definitely shop for art from the more than 200 booths, but the event isn’t just about shopping. There will also be hands-on art stations, live music stages, and tons of food from local vendors.

About that live music: organizers do everything they can to pack the festival with local acts of all kinds. This year, there are about 38 local musical acts performing on the festival’s three stages over three days.

On Friday night, River Arts Fest will host a special free art and music show from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the corner of GE Patterson and South Main featuring The War and Treaty and the Cody Dickinson Project. This is the only free day, but keep in mind that only a few of the art booths will be open. It’s also South Main Trolley/Art Night this weekend, so it’s definitely worth going to.

River Arts Fest will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $5 (cash or credit cards ok) and is free for kids under 10. Leave the pets, coolers, skates, and bikes at home.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
