5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 8/17 – 8/19

Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's this week's shortlist of five fun things to do with the next 72 hours:

1. Duran Duran, Memphis Botanic Garden, Friday, 8:30 p.m., $40,

According to that most reliable of all sources, Wikipedia, Duran Duran's members were once known as "the prettiest boys in rock". See how they've held up when they play an outdoor show at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Aug. 18. Picnics and blankets are allowed, as is singing along to "Hungry Like the Wolf."

2. Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, Cannon Center, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. both days, various prices

ETA Contest, Memphis, Tenn.

For those of you who never got to see Elvis perform, the annual Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest is the next best thing. Elvis tribute artists from all over the world will don their jumpsuits (or suit jackets), sculpt their sideburns and do their best gyrations while singing the King's song. Semi-finals are during the day, and the main event is Saturday night.

3. Free Yoga Day, Six local yoga studios, Saturday, all day, free

Free Yoga Day Memphis

Lululemon Athletica is celebrating the opening of their new Memphis store by sponsoring a day of free yoga classes at Midtown Yoga, Evergreen Yoga, Yogafest, Better Bodies Yoga, Bikram Yoga, and Give Yoga. Each studio is managing their own classes, so visit their websites to see times, locations and types of practice.

4. Memphis Roller Derby Intra-League Championships, Saturday, 7 p.m., $12 adults / $6 kids

Memphis Roller Derby Championships

If you've wanted to go to a roller derby bout but have been putting it off, it's time to stop all of that silliness. Saturday's intra-league championship bout is the last game of 2012, and it's going to be a good one. The defending champions, the Women of Mass Destruction (my team, in the interest of full disclosure) are playing the scrappy, hard-hitting PrissKilla Presleys who are totally in it to win. Doors open at 6 p.m., the bout starts at 7 p.m.

5. Rock'n'Romp, Minglewood Hall, Sunday, 2 p.m., free for kids, $5 for adults

Memphis bands Darien Clea, Tiger High, and (soon to be a very big deal) Fast Planet are playing this month's Rock'n'Romp at Minglewood. Remember, Rock'n'Romp shows are geared at kids, so if you want to go, you have to have one with you. It doesn't have to be yours.

If none of these events are your thing, there are tons more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.
