365 Things to Do in Memphis #213: Behold the Sputnik

It doesn't seem grand enough to tell you to go see the Sputnik. The greatest neon sign in Memphis deserves more gravitas. One should behold it, or gaze upon it or consider it (especially because doing so means ticking off assignment #213 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis).

Sputnik, Joe's Liquor, Memphis, Tenn.

The Sputnik sits at the corner of Poplar and Evergreen, a shiny beacon of mid-centrury hope rising above the specials board at Joe's Liquors.

Neon spikes shoot out from the sign's two hemispheres that rotate day and night. Seeing it during the day is impressive, but it's even better at night, when all of the lights are turned on.

As a bonus, these guys claim that the sign inspired Elvis. To what end, I'm not sure, but there you go.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
