365 Things to Do in Memphis #210: Listen to Booker T. Cover the Beatles

The Beatles' "Abbey Road" is a great record, but Booker T. and the MGs do it a little bit funkier on "McLemore Ave." Assignment #210 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to listen to Stax take on the Fab Four on "McLemore Ave."

Booker T. and the MGs - McLemore Ave.

Booker T. and the MGs don't just cover the Beatles, they completely rework "Abbey Road" into something that sounds soulful and raunchy and entirely new. The record sounds more like a mash-up before its time than a cover record. "Abbey Road" is there in its entirety, but the Stax crew rubbed some dirt into it and  stitched into long, instrumental medleys.

And as far as I'm concerned, the Booker T. version of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” is what the Beatles were trying to achieve, but couldn't pull off.

Pick it up on emusic, iTunes, or at your favorite local record store.
