Pizza Shack, Baby That's Where It's At (Closed)

(ed. - Sorry about the bad "Love Shack" reference. I had to.)

ed. note. - The Pizza Shack is closed. This location is now home to the lovely Elwood's Shack restaurant.

It took three tries, but I finally managed to find the Hollywood Pizza Shack.

I tried Google maps, I tried the advice of others, and finally, I managed to find it while trying to turn around by circling the Lowe's parking lot. The Shack is so difficult to find becuase it claims to be on Summer Ave. (and has a Summer Ave.) address, but is really tucked into a corner of the Lowe's parking lot at Summer and Perkins, invisible to people driving down Summer looking for it.

Once I found it, though, I was glad I did.

The Hollywood Pizza Shack is in a building that's barely bigger than a double wide trailer. Half of the space is the restaurant's kitchen and the other half is a dining room that maybe seats about 20.

I got lucky by choosing to go to the Pizza Shack on a Wednesday night - it's the night when they run a special where you can get a large one topping pizza for $10. My dinner date and I decided to split a salami pizza and an order of breadsticks ($3.50).

They were tasty in a very particular way. The dough - which is the same dough that they use for their pizza crusts - is pretty dense, but it's seasoned with herbs and went well with the little tub of marinara sauce that came on the side. I should have eased up on my breadstick consumption a little bit, because by the time our pizza came out, I had gotten a little full.

The picture doesn't do the pizza's enormity justice. It could have easily fed three (or possibly four not terribly hungry) people. It was better than I expected it to be, too - not too thin, not too thick, and with plenty of sliced salami.

Next time, I'll probably branch out and try one of the specialty pizzas - they have chili cheese pizza which sounds like both an awesome and a terrible idea. Hollywood Pizza Shack also has an eating challenge. If you can kill their 6 lb. Shack Attack pizza in less than an hour, you get the pizza for free and your picture on the wall.

The Hollywood Pizza Shack is open 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and 12 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday. They're kid friendly, non-smoking and accept all major credit cards.

The Pizza Shack is absoultely incredible, and has some of the nicest people working there! It took me forever to find, but once I did it was worth it. It is dangerously close to my house now though. Great post.

Sure sorry you didn't find the place earlier. We used to rate this place as the best in Memphis. Then the original owners sold it & moved away. We went in once after the new owners started running it, and even though they said they were using the same recipes, the pizza just wasn't up to the taste and quality of the original. They may be using the same recipes, but I think they have changed suppliers to a cheaper set of products. We probably won't be back. -Santa o<|;-)>>>

And where did the "Hollywood" name come from. Since it opened, it's always been (as it says on their sign) just The Pizza Shack.
