365 Things to Do in Memphis #123: See a Movie at the Orpheum

Some movies aren't meant to be watched on your laptop. Assignment #123 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to take in a classic movie on the big screen during the Orpheum's Summer Movie Series.

Most of the movies are big-time fan favorites with sing alongs, but they usually throw in a few wild cards. This year (2017) you can catch cult classic like The Princess Bride and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, along with annual classics like Breakfast at Tiffany's and Gone With The Wind. Seeing a movie at the Orpheum isn't quite like going to a regular theater. Before the films, there's live organ music, trivia and costume contests, cartoons and themed cocktail hours. People show up in costume (whether or not there's a contest), and there's a fun, collective feeling to seeing something that you're familiar with in the company of likeminded people.

The Orpheum summer film series starts on Friday, June 2 and includes a film nearly every weekend until August 25. Tickets to all of the screenings are $8 for adults and $6 for kids, with discounts for group tickets.
