365 Things to Do in Memphis #81: Check Out Second Editions

The best used bookstore in the city is inside the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Assignment #81 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to check it out, no pun intended.

Second Editions Bookstore, Memphis, Tenn.

Though Second Editions is stocked with donated books, CDs and records, the stock isn't an unorganized mess of books that you'd never want to read. The volunteer staff only keeps the best of the incoming items for sale and weeds out the rest.

The store occupies a spacious room on the library's first floor. The shelves are organized by type of book - cookbooks, fiction, history, self help, etc. - and the books are alphabetical by author.

Be warned though - Second Editions is a dangerous place, especially for those of us who already have a big stack of unread books. When I was there yesterday, I just meant to look around (which is how it aways starts) and next thing I knew, I was cradling a four-deep pile of books.

It's easy to make excuses though - the selection is so awesome! The prices are right (most books are priced between $1 and $5). Who knows when you'll find that LP of areobic workouts again!

Second Editions Bookstore, Memphis, Tenn.

Second editions is open Monday - Thursday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. If you've got a stack of gently used books that you'd like to donate to the shop, you can take them to any public library location. All of the proceeds from Second Editions goes to purchase new materials for Memphis' public libraries.

This place is seriously the best! I've gotten so many great gifts for friends and family here...you can find so many great books in often great condition for WAY cheaper than even Amazon. Go here and be and Friend of the Library!
