Q & A with Marcela Pinilla, Musician
Marcela Pinilla is a Memphis-based singer-songwriter. Before you see her tear up the Rhumba Room with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra at tonight's Opus One performance, read her answers to my questions about her favorite songs, proudest moments and what one thing she would bring to Memphis:
Name: Marcela Pinilla
Occupation: Singer/Songwriter
Hometown: Bogota, Colombia
Neighborhood: East Memphis
My favorite song to sing lately is: “Un Mundo Bueno”
The proudest moment I’ve had in the last year was: To have written and recorded together with 8 children "Un Mundo Bueno" which is a song intended to raise money and awareness about college Latino education in America.
If I only had 24 hours to spend in Memphis, I would: Eat breakfast at Brother Juniper's, walk through the Old Forest at Overton Park and hopefully that day they have a show at The Levitt Shell for me to catch, walk the arts district on Broad and ride my bike at the Greenline.
The best thing about my job is: I get to meet new people all the time, also it's pretty fun to be able to party and have a good time with everyone for two hours or so and call it work!
It’s Friday night. You’ll find me: If it's the second Friday of the month you'll find me at The King's Palace on Beale Street. If not it may be at a performance I have, or watching a talented Memphis band, or dancing at The Rumba Room.
If I could bring one thing to Memphis, it would be: more venues to play LIVE music.
In five years, I want to: Have a degree in music therapy and be practicing it on a regular basis. Have released an album made 100% in Memphis and tour with it.
I’m excited about: All the things that are happening in Memphis. Bike lanes, community gardens, farmers markets, healthier food in schools. I feel this buzz going around the city of people loving and believing in the city, it's truly inspiring and exciting.
I love Memphis because: It's real, because people dress and act as they are. I also love the art I've found here, it's like there is a musician, poet, painter or film maker everywhere I look. I LOVE IT.
