365 Things to Do in Memphis #67: Drop a Quarter in the Elvis Shrine

Tons of places in Memphis claim an Elvis connection, but only one is home to the First Church of Elvis Shrine. Assignment #67 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to drop a quarter in said shrine and watch it work its magic.

Elvis Shrine, Goner Records, Memphis, Tenn.

The shrine lives in a corner near the counter at Goner Records. Its pink interior is loaded with tchotchkes (some of which have nothing to do with Elvis). It's lit from above by the primary colored light of a disco ball and the hand-painted King of Rock'n'Roll is outlined in twinkle lights.

A full benediction at the shrine can be had for 25 cents whenever Goner Records is open.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
