Your Guide to Tennessee Tax Free Weekend

Your Guide to Tennessee Tax Free Weekend

Updated July 2017

It's that most wonderful weekend of the year, at least for those of us who need new clothes, a new computer and some school supplies and are a little short on cash.

This weekend is Tennessee's sales tax holiday, our annual reprieve from the state's 9.25% sales tax - at least, on certain items.

The sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. on July 28th and runs through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 30th. Some stores have extended their hours, so you may want to call before you shop. If you want to beat the crowds, I recommend going during the day on Friday or later on Sunday.

Here's what's exempt from sales tax this weekend:

Clothing ($100 or less): shirts, shoes, jeans, skirts, school uniforms, sneakers, jackets, undies - if it's less than $100 per item, it's tax-free. This does not include make-up, sports gear, watches, backpacks, purses or anything you'd use to make your own clothing.

School Supplies ($100 or less): Stock up on pens, pencils, notebooks, loose leaf paper, markers, basic art supplies, folders and backpacks. Careful, though - blank CDs, discs, printer supplies, planners and flash drives don't count as school supplies in the eyes of the state.

Computers ($1500 or less): If you don't go too crazy, the computer you buy this weekend could be tax-free. Laptops and desktops are eligible, but super smart phones and computer parts (keyboards, mice, etc.) aren't included.

FYI, Mississippi Tax Free weekend 2017 runs the same dates and times this year, but there are different restrictions and computers are not included. Arkansas Tax Free weekend 2017 is August 5 and 6. Read more.
