I Loved the I Love Memphis Mural Launch Party

I Loved the I Love Memphis Mural Launch Party

After a few weeks of planning and a week of painting, the first I Love Memphis mural is done. Yay!

The mural in Cooper Young was painted by Brandon Marshall. It's the first of ten I Love Memphis-themed murals that will be popping up all over town throughout the summer. Seven will be designed by artists in the Urban Art Commission's mural program, and the other three will be chosen from publicly submitted designs.

During the party, about 200 of you (I think it was that many - I honestly forgot to even start to count) listened to music from the Wuvbirds, drank Ghost River, ate food from Moveable Feast and watched the New Ballet Ensemble's incredible drummers and dancers. You can see all the photos here.

I asked people to write the reasons that they love Memphis on giant post-it notes and tape them to the mural. A ton of you answered the call. Here's why you love Memphis:

- It’s a rough and tough, like leather.
- Of the beautiful, gorgeous and sexy women.
- Of the summer, the people, the Grizzlies, the magic and the food!
- Great people and fun times!
- Native Memphians are the nicest people on Earth.
- It’s a vortex you will never escape. Might as well love it.
- the Greater Memphis Greenline
- Mi Linda familia vive aqui!
- It’s the home I chose!
- New Ballet Ensemble rocks!
- Art! Music! Art! Music!
- the people and the music have soul.
- Memphis loves me!
- There is never a dull moment.
- Of the irony that brought me to Memphis from Orlando. I fell in love with this city. I also fell in love in this city.
- the Mississippi River Park restores my faith in the American family every weekend afternoon.
- Something new is always possible.
- Memphis has the best music in the world.
- It’s the biggest small town ever.
- Midtown is Memphis.
- Blues!
- The people, the music, and my in-laws are far away.
- I teach our children and they are amazing.
- My life prior to moving to Memphis was lacking in purpose and zeal. Memphis has stolen a part of my heart.
- I met my love here.
- Diversity.
- No matter what, you have to come our way.
- Being gay in Memphis rocks!
- It isn’t perfect.
- The amazing variety of people.
- Huey’s and Black Lodge and the Zoo and Spin Street.
- Mayor AC Wharton rocks!
- It’s a great place to be a parent.
- the Old Forest
- The MLGCC is here.
- Grit, grind, heart.
- the one degree of separation.
- It’s boss!
- of all of the beautiful, ugly, good, band and differences that make it Memphis.
- the Toby skatepark.
- It’s home (and full of pretty girls).
- Memphis has flavor.
- It’s my hometown, and I still learn more about it every day.
- Jenny Cates is here!
- ees nice! (Dallas was mean.)
- The Dixon! The Farmer’s Market!
- Everyone’s an artist!
- I am a U of M Tiger!
- The stellar public library and the super cheap rent!
- P&H Karaoke
- It never floods.
- 87 degrees feels chilly.
- Allergy season rocks!
- This is where my heart is.
- Central’s barbecue nachos.
- We’re working together to become the city we know we can be.
- Todd Suliano convinced me to!
- Of events like this.
- Nutbush is also Memphis.
- of the No Hit Wonders.
- It’s full of angels.
- it has trees.
- Cheese grits and fried pickles.
- I was born and raised here.
- Tiger basketball.
- I believe, I believe, I believe.
- The Grizzlies can still win it.
- Creative people.
- It’s funky.
- All the people who try to make it better.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the I Love Memphis mural launch party last night. It was awesome (and a little overwhelming) to see so many people come out and show their love for the city and this really cool project. A special thank you to Brandon Marshall, John Weeden, Siphne Silve, Regena Bearden, and Mary Cashiola for helping to make this happen.

The next mural will be going up soon. I'll keep you posted on when and where it's going to be.
