Make Friends with Let's Be Friends Again

The printed version of the made-in-Memphis web comic Let's Be Friends Again is dedicated to two people: Curt Franklin's parents and Superman.

Chris Haley's dedication to Superman is touching: "Dedicated to Superman. I can only imagine how much worse I'd have turned out without you." Curt's note to his parents is a little more straightforward: "Dedicated to my mom and dad. This probably wasn't what you had in mind."

It's that combination of reverence for other comics and DIY "we-have-no-idea-what-we're-doing-but-we'll-do-it-anyway" ethos that make the 5 year-old comic great.

Let's Be Friends Again is the creation of two Memphians - writer Curt Franklin and artist Chris Haley. They've been drawing their bi-weekly, web-based comic strip since 2007.

Online, Let's Be Friends Again is a short strip about two friends and their mutual love of comics. Some strips are retold conversations between friends about girls, Little Richard and making art. Some are about the way that Curt and Chris were influenced by the comics of their youths. Others feature classic characters (think Superman, Archie and Batman) in the sort of awkward situations that might exist if comic books had blooper reels.

Inside LBFA

In book form, Let's Be Friends Again is an anthology of past strips with DVD-style commentary from the creators under each strip. We learn that the banana on the laptop (instead of an apple) is the bane of Curt's existence and that the baby in a re-imagined Archie strip was modeled after Chris' newborn niece.

If you were the kid hanging out at the comic store all weekend (or, if you were friends with those kids), you'll probably relate to Let's Be Friends Again. New comics are posted every other week online, with blog posts from Curt and Chris filling in the gaps. You can find "Let's Be Friends Again: Vol. 1" at Comics and Collectibles in East Memphis.
