365 Memphians, Day 84: Meet Andy Meek

365 Memphians, Day 84: Meet Andy Meek

365 Memphians - Andy Meek

As a reporter for the Memphis Daily News, Andy Meek spends most of his time filling us in on business and legal happenings around town. Here he is, on the other side of the notepad:

Name: Andy Meek

Occupation: reporter for The Memphis Daily News

Hometown: Memphis

Neighborhood:
Cordova

My favorite thing about spring in Memphis is:
walking the Wolf River Greenway. Side note: that’s also one of my favorite things about fall in Memphis.

The most Memphis thing I’ve ever seen is:
Memphians tripping over themselves to check in at Snowpocalypse on Foursquare.

My weirdest day on the job involved:
interviewing and taking a photo of Mayor Herenton packing up his office in 2009. Downstairs at City Hall, City Council members were engaged in an intense debate with each other about whether was, in fact, leaving. Upstairs, the mayor laughed to me and didn’t see what the fuss was about.  “Look at all this,” he said, gesturing to his boxes. “I’m pulling out, man!”

It’s date night. I’m probably taking my wife to:
I’d tell you, but a magician shouldn’t reveal his secrets.

My favorite local sport is:
local politics. It keeps you on your toes. The “games” rarely start on time, and you never have to wait long before somebody files a lawsuit.

The most interesting person I’ve met in Memphis is:
Memphis City Council attorney Allan Wade. It’s easy to find a guy interesting when he throws down the gauntlet with phrases like “I’m your huckleberry.”

I’m working on:
the great American novel.  If by working on it you mean thinking about it.

I hope that:
I’ll get to take my kids to Davis-Kidd one day. And that there’s a Soul Fish in heaven. Where they serve YoLo and/or Muddy’s for dessert.

I love Memphis because:
it’s the kind of place people like Seamus Loftus dream about coming to. Seamus, who’s opening an Irish pub Downtown, told me “I come from a fishing village of about 1,000 people, and I knew where Memphis was before I ever knew where London was.”
