Try a Little Bit of Everything at Mayuri

Going to a new restaurant can be a little intimidating, especially if said restaurant has an extensive menu of dishes you're unfamiliar with. Mayuri Indian Restaurant understands this. There's an item on their dinner menu called the "First Timer Special", which is an introduction to Indian food in the form of a sampler platter loaded with mixed vegetables, vegetable koorma, chicken curry, raita, rice pilaf, pooris and gulab jamun.

Mayuri, which is located in a shopping center in the no-man's land between East Memphis and Hickory Hill, serves what is possibly the best Indian food in town. Last night, I ordered the Fish Masala Thali dinner, which came with big chucks of salmon in Masala sauce and cute sampler bowls of vegetable curry, creamy raita, a chicken soup-type liquid and some mixed veggies.

Everything was fantastic. The masala sauce was well-seasoned and kind of minty, and the chunks of salmon were ginormous. I was a big fan of the raita, too - if you dip a piece of your naan into it, it's perfection.

Here's how much I loved the food at Mayuri: I ate there last night, and I'm already plotting when I can go back this week and try the lunch buffet.

I checked out the tags on the buffet to see what the usual items were, and I was really excited. While some Indian restaurants only serve the basics on their lunch buffets, Mayuri's is huge and not dumbed down. There's a dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday nights, too.

The lunch buffet there is yummy, fabulous, deliciousness. Incredible. Used to go there at least once every other week and now I'm thinking I should bring back that tradition.

Same thing happened to me. I ate there last Wednesday after work, and I was so disappointed that they didn't have the buffet at nite (only Fri and Sat nite), that I went back today at lunch for the buffet. Butter chicken rules.

Be careful really late at night. I was carjacked in the parking lot!

I used to live near Mayuri and ate there frequently. I loved it. Eventually it changed owners and I heard bad things about it so I haven't been back since. Maybe it's time to try it again.
