Art is for Everyone at Flicker St. Studio
On Thursday mornings, a handful of apron-wearing women meet in a small midtown studio, dip their brushes in acrylic paints and go to work on still lifes of shoes, elephants and and vases under the watchful eye of painter Melissa Dunn.
The women are students at the new Flicker Street Studio, a creative space that was designed to make art lessons accessible to everyone, no matter their skill level. The studio offers small classes (they're capped at 12 students) taught by working artists.
Currently, the studio offers classes in figure drawing, acrylic painting, collage, moasics, and book making. The students in the classes are varied - professional artists trying to break out of ruts sit next to beginners and hobbyists. Most classes are broken into 3 to 5 week sessions that meet once a week for 2 to 3 hours.
Flicker St. Studio has only been open a few months, but owner Nancy Cheairs has big plans for its future. She's turning the large entryway and a back room into gallery spaces, and hopes to add more classes to the schedule. "I want it to grow and be a place for creative contemplation for the community," she said. "Part of the fun and energy of the space is the process of seeing what it will become."
