There's Totally Something About Skewby

There's Totally Something About Skewby

About two minutes into his set at Rock for Love a few weeks ago, Skewby had me smitten.

The 21 year-old rapper was bouncing around the tiny Hi-Tone stage in front of a crowd of midtown hipsters, talking about Vh1's "Behind the Music" between songs. That night, I went home and downloaded his remix of Flobots' "No Handlebars". I've played it so much that it's earned a permanent spot on my iPod's Top 25 Most Played list.

Right now, Skewby is probably in his home studio, working on tracks for his upcoming record, "More or Less." The record is going to be his first release of all-original tracks, and it's more personal than his past work. "It's real, it's honest, and the subject matter is more humble," he said. "I've put so much time into it."

All of his work has a positive, DIY ethos. I was surprised to find out that everything he's done so far, all of the records and videos and album art, are self-produced. It all comes off as super professional. There's a real level of care about everything he does.

Skewby isn't quite a Memphis native, but he may as well be. He moved here as a kid and graduated from Cordova High School a few years ago. The self-described homebody  still learning his way around though, using his recording time at Young Ave. Sound as an excuse to explore Midtown.

Skewby loves Memphis!

Even though other cities have bigger scenes, he's sticking around. "Things take a minute in Memphis, but if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere," he said.
