Thrift Scores at the New MIFA Store

Thrift Scores at the New MIFA Store

It's only been seven days since Amy Hoyt became director of the MIFA Store, but the thrift shop has already undergone some major changes.

The first big change is that the store now carries flats of annual plants. Willow Oaks Flower Farms brings them to the store every Wednesday, and they're sold for $3-6 per flat.

Hoyt is a thrift store junkie, so she knows what bargain hunters are looking for. She restocks the clothing, housewares, books, and furniture daily, and the store has a brand new clearance rack (all items are .50).

When I stopped by this morning, she had pulled a handful of items for me to try on. I wound up buying about a third of the clothing she picked out for me. There was a short 1970s tennis dress, an incredibly cute (and fashionable) school uniform dress, a little boy's blazer, and a bright geometric print scarf. The total cost of all my wardrobe update was $9.

I was also tempted to pick up two retro end tables that were $15 each, but managed to talk myself out of them.

All of the proceeds from the MIFA Store go to support MIFA's programs that help needy families and elderly people in the Memphis area. The shop is open Monday - Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
