Preventing Scurvy at the Cove (or Something)

Preventing Scurvy at the Cove (or Something)

While it was really sad to see the Anderton's facade demolished last month, I was ok with letting it go, mostly because part of it lives on.

When Anderton's closed, the entire pirate ship-shaped bar (creepy oil paintings, mirror, masts and all) was bought by the enterprising individuals who opened Memphis's second pirate bar, The Cove.

If you're into obscure Memphis watering holes, I highly recommend the Cove. They pride themselves on serving classic, handmade cocktails (think whiskey sours made with real lemon juice, gimlets, sidecars and Sazeracs).

The Cove has a small but impressive selection of food. They've got pizzas and sandwiches, but my favorite thing on the menu is the Not Wings. They're not fake chicken wings - Not Wings is a bowl of warm, chunky blue cheese dressing and hot sauce that's served with celery sticks and Fritos.

As far as atmosphere goes, there's plenty. There are plenty of cool piratey details, a cozy back porch and a big screen TV that's constantly playing cult classic movies. The music playing on the speakers is a little bit of everything - last week, it was the Pixies and Grizzly Bear.

Granted, all of that quality will cost you. The drinks are a little more expensive at the Cove than at other Memphis bars, but they're totally worth it.

The Cove is located in the emerging Broad Ave. arts district. There's plenty of parking on the street in front of the building.

Dang, you take good pictures! (Cutest four-eyes I've ever seen; wait, don't kill me, I can't read without glasses nowadays!) Lemons are quite expensive. I saw some Food Network or Fine Living program trying to alleviate guilt for using RealLemon for economy. Until I get spoiled on using fresh lemons every time, I'm happy with my sweet and sour mix for sours: 8 oz. bottled lemon juice (Kroger), 8 oz. bottled lime juice (Kroger), and simple syrup from 1 cup white sugar heated until dissolved into 1 cup water. Store refrigerated in an easy to pour from container, and use it to get so polluted it's risky to be online on social networking sites. (Now you know my secret.)
