Found: the Tallest Piece of Public Art in Memphis

Measuring 152 feet by 58 feet, the Rhodes-Hill mural in downtown Memphis is the tallest piece of public art in the city.

The mural "A Note of Hope" was painted by Chicago mural artist Jeff Zimmerman. It's creation was a partnership between the Rhodes College Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts and building owner Chick Hill.  I love this time lapse video showing the creation of the mural in less than four minutes:

I pass the mural almost every morning when I drive down Madison on my way into work. It's impossible not to notice. The colors are vivid, it seems like there's something new to see every day, and the people depicted in the mural are real Memphians. At first, I wasn't crazy about it - it was so busy, too loud and I kept thinking that one of the people in the mural was painted to look like he was smashing into the wall.

But over time, "A Note of Hope" has grown on me. It's a great example of Memphians teaming up to transform something bare and ugly into something interesting and beautiful. Last week, Creative Cloud named it as one of the "50 Most Stunning Wall Murals from Around the World" (hint - we're no. 11).

Check it out:

Drive West on Madison into downtown. It'll be on the left, facing East, right next to Autozone Park.
