Found: Piggly Wiggly Receipt
Since both Ugly Mug Coffee and a Piggly Wiggly receipt are on my scavenger hunt list, I had this brilliant idea that I would go to the Piggly Wiggly (aka the Pig), buy a pound of Saving Grace or Southern Pecan and then keep the receipt, taking care of two scavenger hunt items with one trip.
Only, the Pig on Madison and Avalon in Midtown doesn't carry Ugly Mug coffee (however, they do carry bags of High Point coffee, for those that miss High Point). I started wandering around looking for something else to buy.
Piggly Wiggly was founded by Clarence Saunders in Memphis in 1916. It was the first self-service grocery store (meaning that rather than handing a shopkeeper a list, shoppers were able to choose their own groceries from the shelves). The concept took off - at the company's peak, there were 2260 stores and an annual revenue of $180 million.
Despite the fact that the Piggly Wiggly is a Memphis institution, I had only been in the midtown store once (I usually drive out to East Memphis or take my chances on the Midtown Schnucks).
I came in through the freezer section (I'm not sure if that's proper Pig protocol - it just seemed that that was the way I was being herded). The store is huge, but it was a little hard to find things. They've got a fairly impressive produce section (though, when I was there, the lights were out).
I wound up buying some Chex Mix, some Whoppers (not nearly as satisfying as the malted milk balls from the Peanut Shoppe downtown) and some gum.
