12 Ways To Love and Serve Memphis In October: Volunteer Ideas

Volunteer Odyssey has put together this list of local groups that need your help this month. 

As we step into fall and catch our breath, consider giving some of your time to our local nonprofits working to educate, feed, and house our neighbors.

1. Memphis Botanic Garden, Fall Plant Sale, October 7th from 9:00 to 2:30

The Fall Plant Sale is an opportunity for guests to shop from a variety of plants, trees, shrubs and edibles propagated in our own nursery and greenhouse. These selections are ideal for our regional growing conditions, and are grown for their hardiness, adaptability, and unique characteristics. Volunteers will assist with greeting guests, helping guests box up plants, and collecting shopping carts, and more!

2. MIFA, Delivery Drivers, Monday through Wednesdays, 9:00 to 12:00

MIFA has an urgent need for volunteer drivers this month! MIFA works to support the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs. Come spend an hour or two delivering hot lunches to homebound seniors on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. Our new mobile app streamlines the process, allowing for more time to interact with seniors on your route!

3. Boys and Girls Club Golf Classic, October 11th and 12th from 11:00 to 5:00

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis will host their 24th annual Golf Classic on Monday, October 11th and Tuesday, October 12th. Though the event will look different this year, 100% of proceeds still go to the programming and services provided to 4,500 at-risk youth in our community every year. We are seeking a limited number of volunteers each day between the times of 12pm-5pm to assist with registration, serving lunch, and as course assistants.

4. Habitat ReStore Virtual Orientation, October 12th from 4:00 to 5:00

The first step to volunteering with the Habitat ReStore, is attending a virtual orientation. During this training, you learn more about Habitat for Humanity, the ReStore, and the impact your time will have on their mission of ensuring everyone has a decent place to live. With a variety of opportunities to choose from, there is something for everyone at the ReStore.

5. Pinecrest Camp, Trail Maintenance Mondays, October 18th from 10:00 to 2:00

Join Pinecrest Camp in the perfect socially-distanced volunteer opportunity this fall. They are smoothing trails, creating new trails, clearing up and restoring old trails, removing invasive plants and restoring wetlands around campus. They can supply some tools, or you bring your own loppers, trimmers, rake, or shovel. This is a great opportunity to spend time in nature and give back.

6. Metal Museum, Repair Days 2021, October 21st through 24th with various shifts

During this annual event, our volunteer repair specialists restore metal items to their former glory – everything from rusted garden furniture to broken jewelry to warped
heirloom silver – all to raise funds for Museum programs. At Repair Days we’ve seen it
all and repaired it all. You don't have to be a metalsmith to volunteer! We have
volunteer opportunities for non-metalsmiths including helping at the estimating table
(tagging items, entering customer information into the computer, processing payments,
etc.) or repair pick up tent (calling customers to let them know their repair is ready, tracking repairs that have been picked up, etc.); clean-up and beautification projects on the grounds; assisting with the Family Fun Tent activities or the Dinner + Art Auction!

7. Youth Villages 5k and 10Miler, October 23rd with various shifts

This year YV is celebrating the 39th Annual YV5K & 10Miler! We’ve moved to the fall, but are excited to continue to offer this event. Join the oldest 5K in the city of Memphis that benefits youth and families in our community. Volunteers take part in every aspect of the race and are essential to a successful race day!

8. Catholic Charities, Food Box Distribution, October 23rd from 8:30 to 12:00

Catholic Charities of West Tennessee is partnering with UT/TSU Extension to present the Frayser Drive –Thru Health Fair Saturday, October 23. This event will be held from 9:00am-1:00pm at Frayser Community Center located at 2555 St. Elmo Avenue, Memphis, TN 38127. Catholic Charities will be providing Family Food Boxes to anyone in need. Volunteer roles will include data collection, loading food boxes into cars and assisting with traffic direction near our spot as needed.

9. Memphis Rox, Soulsville Community Closet, October 26th from 11:00 to 2:00

Memphis Rox is asking for volunteers to help assist with the operations of our Soulsville Community Closet. The closet is open one day a week, on Tuesdays from 10am-1pm, and offers all products up to 50% off retail price. We ask that volunteers come help assist customers with their shopping needs such as assistance with carrying or bagging purchased products. This event is hosted indoors and masks are required. Policies have been implemented to ensure a limited number of customers are in the store at a single given time and adhere to suggested CDC guidelines.

10. Memphis Animal Services, Opportunities Daily

The first step to volunteering with MAS is attending one of their volunteer orientations, either tailored to working with cats or dogs. Once you have attended, you will be able to register for events like offering support and enrichment, taking photos of the animals for their adoption profiles, delivering medicine, and more! Whatever your interest, there is an opportunity for you to give back to MAS and support healthy, happy animals.

11. Pinecrest Camp, Bathouses and Bonfires, October 29th from 5:15 to 9:00

At Bat Houses and Bonfires, families or scout groups enjoy a night out building a bat house that they can take home to protect bats. They get dinner around the campfire, wagon rides, educational stations, etc. Volunteer duties are mainly to help setup and serve dinner then clean up that area. Some duties may include craft or activity assistance. This is a great opportunity to help kiddos learn about how to care for creation and spend some time out under the stars.

12.    Cooper-Young Farmers Market, Vendor Helper, October 30th from 8:00 to 12:00

If you want to help small businesses build capacity and want to learn more about what it takes to be a vendor at the best farmers' market in the Midsouth, then we have the opportunity for you. The Cooper-Young Farmers Market is in need of volunteers. Join them on a Saturday and help vendors run their booths!
